New member and question re knitted lace

Thanks Noreen.

I have to admit, even though I liked the old design, I like the new design a lot better so I'm glad people told me it was ugly :-)

Well!!! I just went and looked and it's NOT, imho! I thinks it still easily manuverable (sp), and well laid out! Noreen :)

Sorry to piggy-back here, Noreen, but I also liked the way it was put together, so that you could look up something either by name or by viewing a picture. I think having the pictures of each item or pattern is great.

I wouldn't call it "ugly" by any means. It's very easy to navigate, and the format itself is crisp and clean, but personally, the colors are not to my taste (the green hurts to look at for me), and the font is, well, ho-hum. Not ugly. I've SEEN ugly, and this ain't it. It's a no-nonsense site, and for that, I'm glad. I like the Celtic kitty, which I didn't see last time (bookmarked pages didn't bring that up).

I looked at her site, not sure if I saw that particular scarf, but did see a beautiful one that I think would be perfect. Has that gossamer effect, but not a pattern that demands being looked at, and could be done for formal wear or casual wear without limiting its usefulness. (What do they call those movie people... critics? I sound like a pattern critic, don't I? Wonder if there's money in that...)

Have you recovered from your student? lol Was he/she white or black, Afrikaans or English?

LOL

Nothing like working on a website and being told there's something wrong with it! I also did my own website. Maybe you'd like to check it out and tell me if it's pretty? I must admit I'd rather have a profitable functional one than an unprofitable pretty one, but then I am trying to make money through mine.

I did a google myself when I read your message and got a shock. One place in USA had got it up for sale at $431.95 and on Amazon at $198.00 and $196.40.

Yet one sold recently on UK ebay for 17.50 GBP. Mine cost 6.95 GBP when I bought it. It is a 81 edition, hard back with dust cover and in very good condition, no damage at all. Maybe I should wrap it up and not put it back on the book shelf. Shirley

I second (possibly third and fourth) the recommendation for Sharon Miller's book. It's beautifullly laid out and the amount of info in it is immense.

No, certainly no toes have been stepped on here. I'm a total geek when it comes to website design. If something's not working (like navigation isn't easy or whatever), then I like to know because I like to fix them.

I do have to get some of my software fixed so I can replace the hand-drawn charts though. I corrupted my copy of designaknit and haven't made upgrading it a priority :-P

Hey, elephants! You never know, I might be a future customer one day. DH and I were talking about dream holidays just the other day and the one thing I really want to do is see elepants in Africa. Trouble is he wants to go to Disneyland and our daughter wants to eat her way across Italy. ;-)

I have to say that I *love* that shoulder shawl... especially the lacey edging. :o) I'd be interested to know if it would work into a full sized adult shawl just by starting out with more stitches or if other things would have to be readjusted to do that?

Also... just asking... is there a reason why you can't get to some of the patterns (the ones not in pink, I mean)? Are they just not ready for public viewing yet, or are they for a "members only" type of thing?

The lace work is just gorgeous, and I would love to do some of it... but I hate charts, so I'll just look and drool. ;o)

Just an add-on.... I really like that "Leaf and Acorn Lace"... especially the fact that it *isn't* done on a chart... so maybe I can try it sometime. :o)

I like your site, Catherine! Of course I *love* animals!! :o)

Somewhere (don't know if it's on a disk from the old computer, or if I managed to find it again on this computer.. it's been a while) I have a URL for live cameras in African. I *think* it was called Africam or something like that. I used to love watching for animals showing up at a watering hole, or just crossing in front of the camera at all. I should find it again and go back to watching. :o)

Someday, if I win a lottery and have money for travel after paying off bills, I will get to Africa to actually see the animals and take my own pictures.

Sarah,

Hope I'm not stepping on any toes either but since you asked...I would say the thing that jumps out at me when I go to the site is the font. Obviously that has a lot to do with personal opinion and this is just mine but I don't like sites which have that font that looks like it's from a typewriter (courier, I think it's called?). I think a more rounded font (like on boston.com, cnn.com or ebay.com) is more appealing to the eye and easier to read.

JM2C (and I only mention it since you asked!), LauraJ

(PS Otherwise the site looks great - when I have more time I will definitely spend some time hunting around it!)

I found this website with free patterns and one of them is called a Cobweb Shawl. Maybe you could find something you like here and then you could print it and just buy an appropriate yarn.
