Well, I decided that I would make a pair of double-knit mitts. I found the pattern online and I'm doing them in one colour. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

It's the needle retaining bar. On a lot of the Japanese machines, that's a channeled piece of metal with a spongy, fabric-covered insert on the side that goes against the needles. When that deteriorates, you tend to have problems with pattern stitches, especially lace knitting, and eventually all types of knitting.

It seems that most of the sock knitting machines that show up on eBay are in Canada. But the prices haven't fallen. Sometimes I wonder whether some of them are the same machine, being resold as people give up on learning to use it.

I'm sure a bit of that goes on! One of my machines came from Saskatchewan but managed to tame it. ;)

I have thought about it, but I enjoy knitting socks by hand. And, since I am the only one who actually wears them, a machine would be of no benefit.

Not much. Just a few quirks that were slightly different from my other machine.

Bummer! If he turns up on the sock machine list, I'll snag his address. Maybe he changed ISP's or maybe he ran out of attics to raid for machines to salvage.
