Re: Tuesday: tue questions :)

1.Well life intervened and stopped my from going up to the fair. Did > anyone

> meet up, was it fun, are there any other knitting workshops coming up? Hi Laurie,

I was there, and met Els and several other members of the local Guild. Els was demonstrating Kumihimo braiding and was spinning too. I tried my hand at the locker weaving. I found that interesting.

There was a knitting group going on with some young children taking their first steps in that craft. Someone had some beautiful bobbin lace and there was seom gorgeous knitted lace too.

It's always fun to see what people are doing. And, of course there was the market.........

2. I'm in the middle of making a knit zine. Is it ok to ask a question > here > about peoples preferences? ( if so, i'm wondering if people prefer > downloading or reading zines online?)

I prefer to read things online.

I would rather read on-line. Downloading takes too much time. Good luck! Katherine

Thanks Laura I've only seen online knit zines but i've been helping make a music one for a while. It's a kind of small publishing thing - there are a few around . Plenty online too. Thanks for the input about downloading - Adobe is exactly what i mean. Did you know if you want to read something in Adobe you can just click on the link and save it to your computer. It's way quicker than waiting for adobe to open - i'm usually wanting to look at a pattern or two that way, so i just d/load all of them, then open adobe and read. You probably know that already anyhow..but just in case :) My knit zine will have patterns, articles and links to pages. Knitting news ( if i can find any ) and techniques. I read lots of the traditional magazines but it's been a while since i subscribed to any. That's because generally i've found they are getting less and less useful/interesting. laurie

Darn it! I really want to learn lace knitting - i only know the basics. I haven't heard of Kumihimo braiding so i'll do an internet search on that. I was so hoping to meet up with you all.

Thanks Eimear - that seems to be the general concensus :). laurie ps at least i saved money since i didn't get to go to the market either ( trying to find the silver lining)

Hi Mirjam :) A 'zine is a kind of not commercial magazine...the beauty in it is the un-cookie-cutter-ness ( is that a word?) You can find zines at music stores usually. They get put out by people who are very interested in something and want a way to communicate their thoughts on paper ( or online in the case of an ezine) Broken Pencil reviews zines

formatting link
. If you used thesearch utility there, you can findzines about almost anything. I've talked to a woman from back east here inCanada who has put out a knitzine. She does hers all by hand, evening stitching the pages together! The musicone i've been helping with has 24 pages- letter paper folded in half and photocopied on both sides. It has musicreviews, some artwork, band pix, eventcalendar and some political ranting :).Gosh prolly more than anyone wanted to know about zineslaurie

Both. I usually print them if I hope to do them soon, and download them if they are for some future date.

Yeah, I did know that about Adobe but I still prefer not to save stuff onto my machine (even though I'm pretty sure that just clicking the link saves it to your machine, right?). Anyway, it is more my annoyance at links that I click without realizing they are Adobe. Then I have to wait for it to open when I probably would have just skipped it if I knew it was Adobe in the first place.

Your knitzine sounds great! I agree w/ your opinion on the traditional knitting magazines. I've never had a subscription because I page through them and there are usually only one or two patterns or articles I'm remotely interested in.
