Does anyone on this list go to places like the Salvation Army to purchase old sweaters just for the yarn? If so, what's your experience been like?

I often have :-)
It takes an evening or two to take out the seams very patiently, and then just pull the knitted out along as it was knitted - rolling into a ball as I go.
I get in a mood for it once in a while, and do afew sweaters (UNdo afew sweaters) in a row.
