Eimear thanks for that clarification, I was really getting confused.

The very cheap sock wool Wooly was talking about was on sale from an American company.

Anything coming across the border from the States to Canada, will have duty on it if the same article is also manufactured in Canada (that is to protect our manufactures.) Start with the difference in the dollar, add to it the mailing cost. Depending in what Canadian province you live, you also have to pay provincial sales tax, add to that the federal goods and services tax. Forget the sceme of " this is a birthday gift" It does not hold water. Our son Dennis lives in the States and comes home each and every Christmas. He can tell you all about sending or bringing gifts across the border....and so can I doing it in the other direction.
