Ugly things

What, in your OWN opinion was the ugliest thing you've ever knitted or crocheted? Did others think it ugly as well, or was it just 'you'? Have you ever made another 'like' it, because it kind of/sort of "grew" on you?

A discussion topic brought to you by: :D ;) who else? Noreen!

Noreen,

I never ran into that situation? I made a gold vest years ago that Gail said she did not like it but, her mother thought it was beautiful. I guess that would be it. But I agreed with Glenda. ;)

Hi Noreen:

Hmmm, I'd have to say the ugliest thing I've knitted was a scarf out of one of those trendy yarns (fun fur/boa that type). It was black highlighted with a shade of grey/white. I thought it turned out rather well but after putting it around my (red) coat and asking my family. They all snickered and said it looked like I had "road kill" around my neck (yes skunk). After that I realised that their description was quite accurate and it looked very ugly in my eyes as well.

Hi Noreen

I have made *many* ugly things....and people have seen them and loved them. A few weeks back I brought *the* *ugliest* purse ever (lime, cream, orange, brown stripes with ribbon and eyelash yarns) to the craft consignment store and the lady there loved it...I still don't like to look at it! And just yesterday she loved a shaggy purse that I thought only fit for the bin (made with lots of short lengths with the ends pulled out as all-over fringe instead of weaving them in).

Most of my ugly things get frogged out and remade into something more pleasing...or just tossed straight out! Since I like to use my own designs rather than patterns, I have lots of episodes of 'that AIN'T right'.... :)

A sock that I knit following a "quick and easy" pattern on a yarn band. The gauge was too loose and the whole thing looked and felt crude and floppy. My wife agreed, and nobody else has ever seen it. It is still in my "swatch drawer" to remind me of what that yarn looks like on the recommended needles.

That's an easy one for me! I made my sister a Christening outfit for her son. I thought it was beautiful ( I was a teenager at the time). A few years later I realized that Bright Orange wasn't the color I should have used! LOL And NO - he never wore it.

ROTFL This one *really* hit my funny bone... a bright orange Christening gown. That would definitely wake everyone up in the church. ;o)

Ugly??? My knitting??? Surely you jest! Actually, the ugliest thing I ever knitted was a pair of toe-up socks. I will never wear them. In fact, I should "unknit" them and re-do them as top-down.

Last fall I was knitting scarves in various combinations of black and yellow (Pittsburgh Steelers colors) and something possessed me to use a bright yellow acrylic and black fun fur. It was, and still is, hideous. No one has ever worn it.

I had a variety of scraps from different projects in shades of yellow, pink, and turquoise blue. I crocheted that up into what I felt was a rather gaudy striped sweater. But, it was thick and warm, and I didn't care what people thought, until I heard their thoughts. I got SO many compliments on that sweater, I realized those colors were just coming into fashion, so my being a miser and using up those scraps in plain stripes of loud colors were exactly what appealed to other people at the time.

After that, I knitted up another gaudy to me sweater using Red Heart variegated Mexicana yarn. Since I work in a cold office, but need my lower arms free, I made half sleeves, to the elbow, since short were too open, and long were getting in the way and wearing where my arms rubbed on the desk. I also get many compliments on that sweater every time I wear it since bright colors are still "in".

Nope. I still have the crocheted sweater packed up somewhere. I gained a few pounds, and it doesn't fit so well, but now that the weight is coming off, I'll have to find it and bring it out, as it's sure to still be a hit. The Mexicana sweater is in the drawer even as I type, ready to be put away for the summer months as I switch to my summer wardrobe.

I don't think I'll make another like either of those, as I've come up with what I think is a MUCH more attractive way to use up my scrap colors. I'm making a crochet cardigan with scraps right now and hope to have it done by next winter. I'll let you know if I actually like those results when I get it put together LOL. I have to say I like the pieces I've done so far, as I've done trial layouts of how I'll put it together. Need to puzzle out a few more things like button band, will it be knit or crochet like the peices I've done so far (I noticed I combine K and C more often), and how to join?

Do what the man did with the dead mule. Raffle it off as a mystery prize. The "winner" has the option of getting his money back for the one ticket that won. (But he still has to take the scarf away.) The others have no complaint because they didn't win.
