Working with beads ?

I'm wondering if anyone here has done knitting with beads and what you would think the best way to try it would be without either breaking the bank or getting too frustrated (those beads are TINY!). It sounds, from what I've read in the books, that it can be complicated and somewhat tedious (apparently you have to thread all the beads onto the yarn first??)

If you've tried it, did you like it, is it really as tedious as it seems, and how did you start? Is there a favorite book on it that you found easiest to use or favorite patterns for it?

Loading thread data ...

I've made a couple of beaded projects. Figure out how many beads per ball you'll use and thread that number plus a few extras onto each ball. (Thread the beads onto a sewing thread, tie the thread to the yarn end and transfer.). Just shove the beads along the working yarn, pull up one bead when you need it.

An alternative is to knit without the beads on the working yarn and to knit THRU the beads to put them where you want them. I found this to be somewhat fiddlier than the above method especially with seed beads and very fine laceweight yarn.

Most projects don't need great gobs of beads unless you're going to make a beaded handbag or something where the point is to show off the beads and not the yarn. If that's the case look into beadweaving.

Or, you can buy prebeaded yarn if you have access to the bank's vault...

Ok, I wanna know how Wooly got into my head and answered almost verbatim (sp) how I was going to answer Karen! Noreen now has strains of 'twilight zone chords' going through her head...

Hi Karen,

I've tried it. I did the miser's purse from Swallow Hill Creations:

still have to make the beaded fringe. Threading the beads *was* very tedious. I ended up using a floss threader, though other people are quite happy with a needle. However, I must say that the knitting part was fine. I got easily into the habit of moving the beads up for the next stitch and I think it looks beautiful!

That same company has some free patterns. I think the knitted purse looks good.

GMTA and all that. Did the twerps ever agree you've got your master knitter certificate? Maybe they put my name in the database instead, thus sucking all the info out of your head and stuffing it into mine?

Karen there wa a time when i tried , beads with a tiny , too tiny hole i ended up putting them on a strong sewing thread that matched the knitting thread,, and worked those together, other time i just put loads of beads at the start and slowly worked down a bead every time i wanted one ,,,,, same with crochet , mirjam

You can buy pre-strung beads. With the pre-strung beads, you tie the thread they're strung on to the yarn you're going to work with and (theoretically) slide the beads from one on to the other. When it works, it works great. When it fails, it fails spectacularly (beads everywhere).

I did it once, for a sock-knitting group that I visit. While it was tedious threading the beads, I loved the finished result. One of these days, I'll do a sweater with beads. I had no special book, just followed the directions as given in the group.
