Tranfer pencil problems

I decided to take a big jump and make a tree skirt with embroidered/appliqued designs. I bought a transfer pencil and was told at the time I bought it that I could outline the design, then use my iron to "transfer" it onto fabric. Well, I did this and it didn't work. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. I'm tracing the design onto tracing paper with the transfer pencil, then turning the paper over and ironing it with a hot iron onto muslin (no steam). Got any ideas? Has anyone out there worked with one of these, and if so, how did you get it to transfer?

Thanks for the replies.

Beth, It's been years since I used one of those pencils but it does work great. I do remember that I didn't have much luck the first time. Seems to me that I actually had to read the instructions to get it figured out. :)

I wish this came with instructions. The only instructions I received was the one that the woman over the phone gave me. I'll have to dig out my graphite paper from my art supplies, I guess.

Beth, it could be that it is not you at all. Sometimes these things sit up in the store for a while. Old stock. It could be just dried up. I have had this happen to me. I have used these pencils for years and every now and then this happens. I hope this helps.

Thank you. So I guess I'm doing the right thing, but the darned pencil is not cooperating. I'll sharpen it to try and bring up fresher lead. If not, I'll get ahold of the company. Thank you again.
