basic question

Since most of the folks here appear to be lamplighters I'm wondering if you all have a favorite site to point people to that clearly explains how the beads are made? I am not looking to for step by step instructions on making them but rather a good understanding of what it is you all are doing to create those beads!

TIA -

Looks like you got some good info on lampworking.

But I beg to differ regarding most of us folks here. Actually most of us are beaders, many of whom use lampworked beads. Any kind of beadworker is welcome here -- whether you make them or use them.

thank you for that clarification. I knew there were folks doing things other than lampwork, but most of the threads since I've started hanging around have seem to be either advertisements or lampwork related, which led me to think lampwork had a high number of practictioners here.

I may start making porcelain beads. I really like them, and since I have kiln that will fire I don't see any reason not to try.

Definitely. That's what got me here over a year ago.

No you don't make just polymer beads. You make beautiful works of art!

Here's to another 9 lives.

I'm a lampworker. I also do a little bead embroidery (along with a lot of other embroidery), dabble in PMC and do stringing when my torch isn't speaking to me. I just learned about enameled beads. I need a clone or a few extra days in a week.

Oh, I have to agree with you, Starlia. The faux ivory set I won on JustBeads is so artistic that whatever type of necklace I make with the set, I can guarantee that it will be mine.

I just love wearable art. :=))

I have been dabbling a little in making beads and hope to get a lot better at this.

No, but I do silversmithing and gold work.

Yes, I have been doing it since the 80's. I am self taught since when I started there was little out there for me to learn from and the internet wasn't available when I started.

I do beadweaving, stringing, free form, embroidery and anything beads can be attatched to. I often combine my beadwork and silver and gold work.

At this point, I do bead stringing only. I hope in time to move into the area of PMC, and maybe dichroic glass, but that's going to be a while.

Took a class, want to get into it. Got a torch for Christmas, had to return it since it wouldn't run on natural gas; trying to figure out how I can get set up.

Have done a bit of polymer clay, mostly just marbled beads. Have the copper tubing to try Pam Eastwood's technique of enameling. No interest in PMC, although painting slip on leaves sounds fascinating... I just don't 'mold' that well.

Yep.

Stringing.

Also trying my hand at wire-wrapping. And right now, just trying to get ready for my Valentine's open house (February 7, in case any of you are wandering through Wichita... :-)

I'm pretty much a beginner at this point. I've done one or two of a lot of things and I'm still learning various techniques and trying to figure out which ones are my favorites.

I took a class in lampworking last year, and I have a spice jar full of awkward, lumpy beginner beads to show for it (and I'm really kind of proud of them. :-) I found it wonderfully addictive. But I haven't convinced myself to invest in my own equipment yet.

I haven't made any other sorts of beads. I used to make little sculptures out of Fimo about 10 years ago, and I'll probably play with polymer clay again at some point. I also have a book about making beads out of paper and nail polish, and since I like making things out of "found" materials, I intend to try sometime. I'll probably try PMC at some point too, since I already have the creme brulee torch!

Yep!

I do beadweaving, which is my current biggest obsession, and stringing. I intend to try beaded embroidery at some point.
