I'm Back from the Poorhouse

Ay Carumba what an expensive week!

On Sunday the hard drive controller on my iMac completely died, so the machine couldn't see or mount the hard drive and the machine wouldn't start up. I had known it was lousy for a while (that iMac had been running 24/7 for over four years), but was stalling on replacing it. Repairing the machine would be a stupid decision financially because the cost of a new computer has gone down so much. (as in several hundred dollars to fix, or several hundred dollars for a new, much more powerful computer)

Still, I made a go of fixing it, and spent two days tearing down the old machine and attempting to get the wretched thing going again. Last night, I decided that there was nothing to do but bury the remains and buy a new computer.

Thereafter, the discussion started. Bob wanted me to buy an eMac, on the grounds that they are virtually the same machine as the iMac I was replacing and way cheap. I wanted the new flat-screen iMac with all the bells and whistles. Of course, I got challenged for a logical reason to spend three times the money "for a machine you only use to go online." (It's not like I'm programming anymore, so it's not so easy for me to justify my computer toys, and I _really_ like my technology toys)

I stepped back, thought for a moment and came up with my reason: I want the machine I want because it will make me happy. I am trapped like a rat in the house most of the time, and my internet connection is my contact with the outside world. I could have a lesser machine, but that just isn't what I want.

I ordered the new machine this morning, and it will be here on Friday. :-)

Poorhouse Part 2

Before the unfortunate computer meltdown, I wrote that I am working on a sculptural RAW kimono made of fire polished crystals. Before I started, I made some rough guesstimates and ordered 4 masses of 4 mm round clear crystals. (4800 beads) Since I've been computer deprived, I've been beading my little hands off (well, my right hand anyway - not using the left at all anymore) and realized I had severely miscounted.

I'm partly done with the back of the kimono (it's about a foot square), and I have a half mass of beads left. Ooops. Also, I had ordered the bracelet stand ahead of the project, and realized that my original drawings were too small, so the thing has to be even bigger. I called Shipwreck to order more crystals.

I got the sweetest clerk on the phone who looked up my account and gasped when I told her I wanted an additional 8 masses of FP crystals. She had to ask "What the heck are you using all those for?!" and freaked when I told her. I had to promise to send her a photo when I'm finished, which ought to be around the year 3000. (BTW, when you order that many, they'll sell them by the kilo for a much deeper than usual discount)

Poorhouse Part 3

Went to drive DD to school this morning (yeah, I know. It was really cold and the school is less than a half mile away) and the car wouldn't start. I took out the voltmeter and the alternator is fine, but the battery is junk. Of course, because it's a VW Bug, I get to buy the fun expensive battery from the dealer instead of the cheap kind you can buy anywhere. I hate spending money on invisible stuff that gives no satisfaction.

---------------------

In case you aren't feeling broke by this point, I have only one more purchasing opportunity to describe for today. DD came home from school with a field trip form for some drama workshop in Rhode Island. Now, when I was a kid and dinosaurs roamed the Earth, a field trip was a couple of bucks.

Not anymore. This flipping field trip is $50, please pay in advance. And, I have to provide a lunch! Double And - they asked if I could chaperone, and if I do, I have to pay an additional $50! (I can't chaperone, but that's besides the point) They did say that scholarship money was available for the trip, but sheesh. $50 for a field trip.

I should call my mother. She'd be totally scandalized.

Jeez, Kathy, stop talking about being able to spend so much money! I'm still trying to figure if I should use my $10 certificate from Rio Grande towards their tool catalog or maybe get some bali spacers with it!

Sorry it's been such and expensive week. But...you'll love the iMac. DH has one. I'm debating about replacing my Compaq laptop with either an iMac or a Powerbook. There's really no need to upgrade my computer, I just want to, LOL.

Can't wait to see that kimono.

I'm constantly getting teased because I'm "so ghetto."<

Kathy, I'm so glad you got the computer you want. And the crystal kimono sounds very intriguing--did you describe what you are doing before and I MISSED it? ACk....I hate missing posts, especially the ones you do, as you are always very interesting.

Where's your DD going for a field trip; is it an acting workshop? $50 is a lot for a field trip, but not if its more than just a museum walk-through. Sarajane

It could be worse... your favorite doc could refuse to see you anymore, ask for $100 up front to even consider it, and since you're poor and can't afford that, he could sue you. Gee, does it sound like I'm whining? LOL

It'll be here tomorrow and I can't wait. Coincidentally, it's our 16th?

17th? wedding anniversary - um, 16th anniversary. So, surprise surprise - we've decided that the computer is our gift to each other.

I did describe it, but the great post eater in the sky may have gotten ahold of it. Or you were reading through google. My posts normally don't show up through there. (They are right now so I can use DD's computer until the new one arrives - I'm too lazy to worry about configuring it for a one day thing)

The kimono started out as something similar to the various beaded kimono patterns that are available online. But first I decided that I wasn't putting all that work into a piece that ends up being three inches high. I wanted something more displayable, and decided about a foot high was about right. Then I read an article about a lady who made a beaded "fur" coat on a base of right angle weave and decided that my kimono would be sparklier and probably cooler in crystals and in right angle weave. I'm using fire polished crystals because there's a smaller chance they'll cut thread and they aren't as scratchy on my arms. (Using 8 lb. Power Pro white thread, doubled and knotted for durability)

Then I went back to the original patterns I was using for inspiration, and have decided that they really only give the suggestion of a kimono, and I want a little more than that. So I've been looking at photos of real kimono online, and am adjusting my plans as I go along. For one, I'm adding an obi to the kimono and a red edge along the neckline, as in real kimono. The obi will be in black FP crystals, while the kimono itself is made of clear FP crystals with a pass of plum seeds as embellishment. I found some very Japanese looking floral beads to use as the kimono's print. The hem and sleeve edging are going to be gold crystals (2X Aurum), with a bit of red seed beading for authenticity.

So far, the back piece is mostly done. (it's going to be in three pieces: back, front and top, to fit over the display stand properly) The RAW fabric is glittery, drapes so beautifully, and feels really, really cool. Once I've finished the crystal RAW part, but before the seed beads go on, the piece is getting a bath. I didn't realize my skin oils and the wax on the thread was going to make the piece lose so much lustre.

I know I'm just running on and on, but it's neat to be able to speak with people who know what I'm actually talking about. The design will probably change a half-dozen times again before I'm done, because this is definitely a muse-driven piece, not one that is even remotely other-driven. The kimono idea was simply the starter, the rest of it is just designing itself as it goes.

My stepmother stopped by yesterday while I was working on it and was in shock. She tells me it looks like something that should go in a museum, and wanted to know if I'd ever sell it. (No.) This one is to make me happy, and if it's museum quality, that will make me very happy.

It is an acting workshop. Also, it has to be on actual chartered buses instead of school buses because it's across state lines. I suspect that those factors are what's making it so expensive.

OTOH, tomorrow, she's going to tour the Amistad slave revolt ship (has a lot of local history), and that's free. The kids are very excited about that, and have been reading about the local connections to the Amistad. DD's best friend is touring the ship today, and I feel sad for her. It's cold and snowing (!) and not the nicest day to be on the water. Hopefully, tomorrow's weather will be a lot nicer.

yeah, or the favorite dentist could crack a tooth, causing the filling to fall out and leave a gaping hole in your tooth and then because your balance was so high could refuse to fix the tooth, and promptly take you to collection for the entire balance. No, we're not whining, are we Karleen???

I think I would try to find a lawyer who would be willing to take this case pro bono and sue that dentist.

wow..........I can barely wait to see it. This sounds very beautiful. You know, I do understand not wanting to part with it---but I think you could probably take a pic, make a postcard, and sell THAT!! That's for telling about it! Sarajane

Yeah that's why THEY win... it just doesn't seem worth all that emotional drain to fight it...

You know, I really believe "what goes around comes around"... And that you SHOULD treat others as you'd like to be treated...

So I'm releasing it ... there it goes ... I'm not owning it... I feel better now!

I'm there with you Carol. I still have a sore tooth on my left side. It's been three years since I even chewed food on that side. I am going to see a new dentist since I need to spend flex money, but after five root canals I'm through. I'm about to say pull them all!
