I just picked this up for our bedtime reading, as soon as we finish our current book (Diana Wynne-Jones: The Ogre Downstairs). Looks promising.

coming-of-age story of a boy and his dragon. pure classic fantasy. and it has a map. i love books with maps. this is the first in at least a trilogy. Eragon is just becoming a man at 16 when he finds a dragon's egg that hatches. the dragon bonds to him and they start off on their adventures "against the evil empire".

Vicki, this is probably a stupid question for you, but have you ever read the Griffin and Sabine trilogy by Nick Bantock? I adore his work. Talk about maps!

Nick Bantock is an incredible artist who created an intriguing story about two people from different places/dimensions?, Griffin and Sabine. (He's also done pop-up books, and conundrums of all sorts). Griffin is a postcard artist in England, and Sabine is a stamp illustrator on an island in the Pacific. She has "seen" his work for years, knows when he changes something in a painting, even though he just did it that morning... The books are a record of the correspondance between the two, complete with letters that you actually remove from the envelopes, all incredibly illustrated. They are sold as a set or individually - I recommend the set. I love these books for the artwork. I recommended them to a literate friend who hated them! Go figure. . I initially read a first edition - exquisite! (wish I had bought it), but the newer ones are nice, too. I think he is now coming out with a sequel, I haven't kept up. I've bought this series for gifts so many times I can't count them. You can often find the set on EBay. I find them mesmerising and every time I take them out it's all new. That may be due to the increasing frequency of my "senior moments"... It's a quick read. you can skim through the series in an hour, or lounge on the couch with them for a week!
