I'm kind of new at this and I am working with 16 ga. wire and making
pin. How do I make the bar pointed so it will go through fabric withou damaging it? I don't want to solder a lighter weight wire if I can avoi it.

I grind mine down wth a file by hand but if I had something better like an electric grinder I'd use that. You just have to keep turning it to make it even. If you're not too particular about finishing you can start it by using wire cutters and cut on the diagonal to make a sharp point, using the file just to round and finish it.

Yup. File to a point and then use emery paper to round up the point and make it even.
