Plant matter is a no-no because of the possibility of spreading diseases to Australia which we don't have, and thus harming the agrucultural industry. If you need to ship stuff in you have to get it quarantined (which will cost you $$$).
They actually have cute little beagles that scramble over the parcels sniffing for prohibited imports.

same thing if you are driving across the California border. Head up, Becki! don't bring any fresh fruit or veggies in the car with you. Wait until after you go through the inspection station to buy them. Depending on how far you've come, they may inspect for fire ants, too.

My son the firefighter/paramedic/training school admin/concert crowd control (he wears many hats), looks like a linebacker, big and solid.
I'm sure ds has seen some of these but I'm sending them anyway!
California has border control?????
My friend explained. She wasn't too disappointed though because they let the Aveeda products slide. Those products are expensive but in Australia they are outrageously priced!

]I'm a bit concerned about the legality of the "service" - I want the ]fer-real thing. I've been threatening to buy my dad a shotgun and make it an ]old-fashioned wedding. (Nothing says the bride MUST be expecting, does it?)
in most states, you can be married by a minister, justice of the peace, judge, and sometimes even a court clerk. trust me - the marriages my brothers perform ARE legal!
here's more than you really wanted to know:
VIRGINIA
Ministers of any religious denomination may perform marriages. Before performing marriages, ministers must provide proof of their ordination and proof that they are in regular communion with their church to the Circuit Court of any county or city or to the Corporation Court of any city in this State. The judge will then authorize the minister to perform marriages provided the minister obtains a bond in the amount of $500. Ministers may receive a fee of no more than $10 for performing a marriage. Ministers must complete the marriage certificate and return it to the clerk who issued the marriage license within five days after the marriage. For questions see the Clerk of the County Circuit Court or the Clerk of the Corporation Court.
ISSUE 1
Code §20-25 provides that "Any judge or justice of a court of record, any judge of a district court of this Commonwealth or any retired judge or justice may celebrate the rites of marriage.... ." The same code section provides that the circuit court shall appoint one or more persons to celebrate the rites of marriage. These persons are often called "marriage commissioners." Code § 16.1-69.21 provides in pertinent part as follows: "While acting as judge a substitute judge shall perform the same duties, exercise the same power and authority, and be subject to the same obligations as prescribed herein for the judge." Canon 2A, provides: "A judge shall respect and comply with the law and act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary." The Committee is of the opinion that a substitute judge may perform marriage ceremonies only when he is serving as a judge pursuant to Code §16.1-69.21. ISSUE 2
Virginia law authorizes a number of persons to perform marriage ceremonies: ordained minister of any religious denomination (Code §20-23), "marriage commissioners" appointed by the circuit court (Code §20-25), active and retired judges and justices (Code §20-25), and persons prescribed by religious societies which have no ordained ministers. A substitute judge does not fall within any of these categories unless he is serving as a judge pursuant to Code §16.1-69.21. The designation of a substitute judge to sit for the sole purpose of performing a marriage ceremony may be seen as a means of circumventing applicable statutes and would violate the provisions of Canon 2: "A judge shall avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in all of the judge's activities." The Committee is of the opinion that it is improper to request a chief judge of a district court to make such a designation and improper for him to accede to the request as well. ISSUE 3
Code §20-27 permits persons authorized to perform marriage ceremonies to charge a fee and certain expenses. The Committee on District Courts has adopted a policy prohibiting district court judges from accepting gratuities or fees for performing marriage ceremonies unless such monies are submitted to the Treasurer of the Commonwealth in accordance with Code §16.1-69.48. All active judges and substitute judges when serving as judges are compensated by the Commonwealth. The acceptance of fees or gratuities by a substitute judge for performing a marriage may well create an appearance of using his judicial position for financial gain. Canon 4D(1)(A) provides: "A judge shall not engage in financial and business dealings that may reasonably be perceived to exploit the judge's judicial position." The Committee views as persuasive authority the position of the Texas Committee on Judicial Ethics as stated in its Opinion 72 that a judge's accepting a fee for performing a wedding ceremony would be an exploitation of the judicial position. The Committee is of the opinion that it would be improper for a substitute judge to accept a fee or gratuity for performing a marriage ceremony.

I concur but this is not new, our rights have been taken away in bits and pieces for decades. Look at those common sense laws for an example. The difference now as I see it, is that there is an excuse and can be open about it. GWB wants his place in history and is a willing pawn and obviously easily played.

Unbelievable! I believe you but you know what I mean.
PA has justices of the peace, too. I've attended several civil weddings, in apple groves, along a river and twice in a courthouse. It's just as valid, legally, as getting married by a minister, just fewer religious overtones. We plan to be married by a JP, since religion is irrelevant to us.

We go through "the border" when we get our lunch after Quartzsite. Sometimes they stop you, sometimes they don't. I think it's a bigger thing in the summer.

The wait time between when you get your marriage license and can actually get married in PA is only like a week or so Joanne. And you don't have to have bloodtests anymore. My husband and I have been married for just over 2 years now here in PA.

In Pennsylvania you can also have a Quaker wedding. $25 for a special license and two witness. That's it - no clergy, no "official". And anyone can get married that way - it's discriminatory if they require you to be a Quaker.
As for Vicki's info - I had already hit Virginia's official website and got the lowdown. I also gathered my information from James City County (where Williamsburg is located). The courthouse is less than 3 miles from the hotel where we're staying during the EGA seminar I'm attending.
All I need is for Keith to say he'll go along with all of this. (He's been such a good sport about this!!)
