OT -- It is funny, or it isn't

I got a letter yesterday telling me to call the city tax department to make payment arrangements on a new amount of money they just decided that I owe them. I call this morning and the women who answered the phone said this to me, "Oh. Are you the one who wrote us the letter saying that you lost your job on the same day that you found out that you owed us money?" I said, "Yes." She started giggling, and laughed throughout the entire conversation.

So, apparently today my role in life was to amuse the city tax department, LOL. Don't worry -- it wasn't a huge amount, and they are letting me do it in payments. It was just the way it happened. Irony, you know?

She started giggling, and laughed throughout the entire conversation.

knowing me - and how bitchy I can be... I'd be calling back tomorrow- asking for her supervisor, and telling them how rude and inconsiderate you thought it was...

and how would SHE like to be without her job!

Well, I'm not defending her at all, but I can imagine laughing at the irony of the situation if I had been Becki.

Becki,

I love your attitude. You seem to know what is important to worry about and what to let roll away. Things will fit in your life.

Geez.

Reminds me of the time in Grad school when I called (from another state) to check on the status of the 2nd installment of my loan check. I was completely out of money and was waiting for the check. The response- oh- yeah it came in, we mailed it back. WHAT?? Oh and you owe us back the first check too.

I freaked. They said I wasn't taking the right # of hours. Now when I registered I asked several times about the hours -one of the courses was an undergrad class and I wasn't sure how it counted - and was told I was fine. Sigh. When we met with Financial Aid the following Monday and they repeated "you need to pay back the first check", my BF pointed out that if I was so upset about the 2nd check not being available just how was it I was supposed to be able to pay the other? Of course it was all a mistake and the finally released the 2nd check to me. Argh.

Kathy K -- I can relate. My college funding story was so awful and so traumatic for me that I still have bad dreamsa about it, over twenty something years later. I will occasionally have dreams where the quarter has started and I haven't signed up for classes yet, and am running all over campus tryinng to stay enrolled. It was not one of the best times of my life.

Oh my god! I hate those people. My ex is trying to (finally) finish school, and they suddenly decided he's a credit short and cut off his financial aid.

Mind you, he's a 35-year-old part-time dad trying to work and make it through school to provide a better life for his kids, not a 19-year-old with no other responsibilities, but they didn't want to cut him any slack. Nor do they seem to care that this is his last year, and the end is in sight.

I asked the stupid question of whether they're there to HELP people or shoot them down.

Neither! They, along with all the other paper pushers, are there to process paper. The more paper they make you fill out, repeatedly, the more secure their jobs. Tha's why the welfare/foodstamp/SSI/etc folks are NEVER going to get things rolling in a smoothly functioning manner---its not in their best interests, long term!

Instead, hire someone to do an analysis of possible methods of change and implementation, hire a committee to study and discuss it, another panel of experts to discuss the findings, and then get someone else to file it away unused. Sarajane

I'm still around, just not much to say. My father moved in with us 3 months ago and it's been a very emotional time for me and my family. I tend to withdraw when I'm stressed. Thanks for asking, though.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for the kind words. Is there anything anyone can do to help? Well, if anyone wants to adopt a cranky, critical, lazy old man who drinks too much, that would be a help. We will get through this in God's timing, I just need to breathe in and breathe out. I so appreciate the people in this group who are caring and reach out to others.
