VERY OT: This s*cks (Rant enclosed)

Sadly, this is what seems to be happening... I have heard rumblings of Very Bad Things happening starting next month, such as the beginning of military training for (formerly civilian) police.

yes, i know that happens. and it makes me physically ill. HMOs are doing the same sort of thing. but that wasn't the part what i was responding to.

exactly!

and for what it's worth, Jamie got better care at the Army Hospital than she did the Navy one. eventually.

And that is the sad truth. Now the shrub is creating another generation of men who will need care for the rest of their "lives", such as they will be. And another generation of women too. And the spouses that will endure far too much trying to care for them when they snap. Barbara Dream Master

One of the guys my husband and I tried to help was taking 142 pills per day. No, that is not a typo. Three different Dr's at the VA were giving him drugs. Supposedly they were all listed on his chart. The man was so swollen with water he rolled from place to place. He could hobble with the use of two canes. We got him to go see our family physician. He immediately cut the meds by 3/4. Within 6 months the man could walk unaided. All the water retention was gone. He was still crazy as a loon, but no longer dying. Another Dr. he saw said it was the worst case of medical malpractice he had ever seen. Compliments of the VA. Seems like the VA figures that the best thing to do is kill the vets off as quickly as possible so that they can stop treating them and stay within budget. Barbara Dream Master

It truly is. They are very connected.

I'm 32, so this is the first time in *my* living memory that we have gone to war based on outright, proven lies, and the first time in

*yours* that we have passed laws eroding the rights of our own citizens to this degree.

well, you qualified it with the "to this degree". that part is probably true. but there were a LOT of problems during the Vietnam era, too.

well . . . let's put it this way. my father started sounding warnings the first time they used a SS# as an ID#. few people would listen to me. he was always a "right wing libertarian", so there were a LOT of things we didn't agree on. we did agree on a lot of the libertarian parts.

he WANTED Bush elected. but after Sept. 11 - he never said another word. he was so appalled at what started happening, i think he died a very unhappy man.

Exactly. I got so tired of repeating that it is actually against Federal Law to use a SS# as an identification for anything but Social Security and tax information. Sarajane

Yeah. I know a lot of really, really unhappy Republicans. They're sort of in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, politically speaking... can't agree with the Democratic party offerings, yet the Republican party has been totally hijacked. It's like a runaway train.

both Michael Connelly [Lost Light] and Sara Paretsky [Blacklist] have relatively new books out [fiction] that make comparisons between McCarthyism/House UnAmerican Activities and the Bush Regime/Patriot Act.

i applaud them for their willingness to take a stand in print. with any luck, it won't come back to haunt them!

]Most vets don't have someone who is strong enough to ]fight for them for 3 years. They end up with nothing.

Barbara, sad to say, it's not just our vets who have these problems. it IS more disgusting that they have the problems, too. they should not - ever.

look at the problems Kathy is having with SSA. and i type reports day after day from doctors fighting HMOs trying to get "permission" for treatments and meds.

and there are HMOs who will delay treatment, hoping that if they delay long enough, the patient will die and they'll be off the hook. Law & Order even picked up on it last year on one of their programs and based an episode on a fictional account.

the status of health care in this country is shameful - unless you happen to be incredibly wealthy.

And if you don't have group health care, you end up paying the very highest rates. $1000 per month or more. And if you can't afford insurance, you pay more for service and meds than everyone else does.
