It's funny I suppose ... but I like driving fast (well maybe not Sheena's 'fast') - but I hate being driven fast. I've only had one speeding ticket in my life .. and it was a total sham .. big fat stupid french cop in Montreal raced out of a school parking lot and as I pulled into a store parking lot, he flew in like a lunatic and totally blocked my car in .. you'd have thought I was an escaped murderer or something .. gawd what a moron! And I was not speeding (that time).

Uh huh....and I'm sure you've seen the ads that say "Speed Kills".

I prefer if drivers would keep their speedy driving for the race track...

Today DH drove us home from a karate tourrnament on the island highway, lots of traffic. We were in the right lane, another car was a little in front of us in the left lane when a motorcycle with a passenger came out of nowhere and wove/sped in between us. It's a miracle no one whas hit or killed.

take care, Linda :)

Uh huh.... and I'm sure you can tell the difference between someone moving briskly and someone driving recklessly. I often exceed the speed limit on the highway. I don't drive recklessly.

Personally, I think cellphones kill.

Well that's interesting. Do you have tracks near you where people can go and drive when they feel like it? That would be fun!

That's reckless driving and there's no excuse for it. When I drive, I move with traffic. Around here, that means I'm exceeding the speed limit by 10 to 15 miles per hour. It would be more dangerous, in many cases, for me to try to move at the speed limit when traffic around me is moving faster.

A smiley at the end of a nasty post does not make it not a nasty post, Linda. If you're mad at the motorcycle driver, track him down and lecture him on his driving. You don't know enough about how I drive to lecture me.

I ditto Brat's post - the suggestion that somehow we drive like that motorcyclist stinks. I do not dodge in and out of traffic, nor do I switch lanes to get ahead, I get in the correct lane and stay in it, like Brat, travelling at the speed of the masses.

In case anyone had ideas, I also do not speed in areas where there are school children or any of those other stupid places to speed. Sheesh!

...so expressing my opinion is nasty? Nah, don't think so. I have seen the results of too many accidents caused by speed to have anything positive to say about drivers who speed.

Talk to your local highway patrol, I think that's what they call it in the U.S. I'm sure they would be happy to discuss the stats of how many people are killed on the highways due to excessive speed each year.

...Linda

P.S. Today we drove to and returned home from a city 2 hrs. from our home to take our son back to university. This time it was cars that were speeding by us like we were standing still and we were going the speed limit. The RCMP were having a great time with their radar guns catching speeders.

Speed has to be considered in terms road engineering, weather conditions, and other factors. Many accidents are caused by driving too fast for conditions, which is a different thing from driving too fast. Here in Saskatchewan, they raised the speed limit on divided highways from 100 k/hr to 110 this year, after extensive consultation with safety experts and engineers. We have lovely stretches of open road where you can see for miles, and on a clear warm day it is wonderful to get a little zoom zoom on them. I wouldn't drive like that on winding wet roads, or during blizzards--I'm a fast driver, not a stupid one..

There are several options to get from downtown Regina to where I live--a regular 4 lane divided major street, a parkway with a 70 k/hr limit, a freeway (80 k/hr) and a ring road at 110. I understand that some people drive under the 50 km/hr limit, and likely for good reasons, like the condition of their car, or their awareness of their own visual or physical limitations. What I can't understand is that with the options available, some of these 35 k/hr drivers inevitably choose the ring road. Both my mom and a friend from a previous job were both pulled over for going too SLOW. Both were doing the speed limit, but traffic around them was going 15-20 miles per hour faster than they were. Cops, on two separate occaisions pulled them over and told them it's much better to roll with traffic than to go the speed limit in a situation like that. They were stunned! It was in Kentucky, btw.

While I know someone who was pulled over and ticketed for going too slow (below the speed limit), I'm unsure whether or not a ticket, in the situations you described, are legal. Unless they were driving in the outer lane thus impeding traffic. Then I hope they got the book thrown at them.

If the road has a posted minimum speed limit (many interstate and other multi-lane highways do) and the driver is under that limit in normal road/weather conditions, there is no question about the legality of the ticket. On other roads it would depend on whether the driver was causing safety concerns or being a real public nuisance.

Nope, expressing your opinion isn't nasty. Assuming that because I like to drive fast and don't always obey the speed limit, I drive like the motorcylist you described in an earlier post or that I would "speed by you like you were standing still" is. There's a difference between exceeding the speed limit and excessive speed. I just think that you should know what you are talking about before you start lecturing people or telling them to speak to their highway patrol. I'm a safe driver with a perfect driving record and I resent your making assumptions about me and then following it up with a smiley. That's what I was calling nasty.

She didn't say they got a ticket, she said they were pulled over and told they were going too slow.

I too have the perfect driving record. I was rear-ended by a truck, while at a STOP sign (driver was inattentive) and next time front ended by a truck while my car was safely in MY driveway and I was asleep in my bed. One could hardly say speed was my downfall either time lol

There have been a few times I wished "something" would happen to the people going 45 in the far left lanes - a warning at least, if not a big money ticket. If you want to go slow - stay to the right. I've seen more accidents caused by people trying to get around the slow poke and not making it to speed to merge into the next most right hand lane.

Does any one else remember the "road hogs" (I think that was the name they went by) from the late 70's - 8 or 9 of them would drive 3 or 4 abreast, going 50 MPS in the 55 MPH zone - because "speed kills". I only remember them because of an incident where the group wouldn't yield for an emergency vehicle and they were all arrested.

That being said - I love to drive fast when conditions permit and never with the kids in the truck.

Sounds like a former colleague. She had an accident every year, but was never the one at fault. Bad drivers were attracted to her like a magnet.

Point taken. Common assumption. I wouldn't think police spend much of their time pulling over drivers without giving them a ticket. :-)
