The generally accepted standard is allow 3 inches on all four sides (that means the fabric sould be an additional six inches wider and six inches longer than the poject's 'finished' size is - ergo you would need a piece of fabric 17in x 13in for your project)

I use the 3" as a minimum. If you have a good needlework framer, talk to them to see how they mount/finish your piece (i.e., pinned, laced, etc.) I usually analyze how many mats, how wide, space to mats and then add to the

3" on each side. For example, if I use 2 mats for a total of 3" from the design, I also need to consider if the mats will be right to the edge of the needlework or there will be space between the stitching and the mats. I know this sounds complicated, but I would rather cut an unneeded inch or two off, then try to add it later.

Does this help?
