Favorite (or favourite as spelled in Oz) Music

Friends & I exchange personal cd's each Christmas with between 17 - 20 songs we love. You would think this was a tough thing to do after afew years but once you get started the songs just keep popping into your head. So I thought I'd ask," What 5 songs would you put on a cd for a friend?" To be fair I will list 5 I will be including on my cd: These are listed in no particular order:

  1. Don't Blink - Kenny Chesney
  2. Help - The Beatles
  3. You Can Leave Your Hat On - Joe Cocker
  4. Better Man - Robbie Williams
  5. Fifteen - Taylor Swift

Well, it depends on who I am making it for, but here's a partial list of one I made earlier this year:

  1. Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
  2. Come on Get Higher - Matt Nathanson
  3. Unbroken Chain - Grateful Dead
  4. It's Not Over - Daughtry
  5. Woman - John Lennon

  1. "The Seabird" Eleanor McEvoy (I tear up every time I hear it.)
  2. Bach's cello solo - any of them - Janos Starker
  3. "Vincent Black Lightning" - Richard Thompson
  4. "Parish of Dunkeld" - Silly Wizard
  5. "Black Muddy River" - Grateful Dead

That's just off the top of my head. Once you start, it's hard to stop! I could go on and on and on!

  1. Forty-Five Years from Now - Stan Rogers
  2. Joy of Living - Ewan McCall
  3. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
  4. Carrickfergus - Lorena McKennit's version
  5. The Lark in the Clear Air - Ralph Vaughn Williams - I like the McKennit version.

I probably could do a 20-choice cd without blinking.

Stan is still one of my all-time favourites. The Field Behind the Plow, Northwest Passage, Lies, Lockkeeper, White Squall, Make and Break Harbour...... it's hard to narrow down a list.

True enough, I don't think he wrote/sang anything I don't love. Gone waaay too soon.

Have you heard his son Nathan? Sounds a lot like his dad. Had a record out this year.

I heard him on CBC. At first I thought it was Stan, but the song was unfamiliar. When the piece was over and they announced who it was, I was blown away. I have a photo of Nathan at the Mariposa Festival about

10 years ago when he was sitting in a session.

He had a way of summing a situation up in just a few pithy phrases didn't he?

"99 of us trying, Only one of us flying.

For those of you who don't know the song, it's about a journey-man hockey player who realizes that he will never make his dream of playing in the NHL come true.

Found you the lyrics, couldn't find a video/mp3 to listen too. Being a hockey mom, this one hits home
