Hooked a new stitcher and other tidbits

Actually, she hooked herself. L is one of the other "new" framers at work and she was really inspired by some of the pieces that come in for framing. So she picked up a kit from the needlework aisle and had at it. Nice thing about seeing other peoples work is you see what results good and bad stitching habits give to a finished piece.

So, when she said she wanted to make changes to her next kit (which also happened in stock and since nobody was ordering custom framing or even had framing question and customers in the store where rarer than hens teeth), I showed her how to make some simple changes. The first and easiest one was the changing the color on part of the butterflies wings. She already understands color theory. (I'm the only non art student in the group)

Next, and my contribution to her evolution as stitcher was to show her the DMC Color Variations and give her different ways to use it. She wanted to make the background ferns "less wussy - ferns aren't that color". So I told her about tweeding/blending (one strand of the original and one of the variations), and either completing each stitch as she goes or what the effect of doing a run of half crosses and then going back would be like. I also told her not to be afraid to rip it out.

I'm really looking forward to the next stage - charts, fabric and more on fibers....

Whoopie!!! It sounds as though your job is really fulfilling. It's great to be learning and teaching and enjoying it at the same time.

Some days, the nicest part is that I'm not at home and usually once you finish something it stays finished... Cheryl
