I used to put out alcohol soaked grain on Dartmoor in Devon and just gather enough later for a pie ! Pigeons that was, not grain.

Are you saying you had to feed them alcohol to get them to lie down and be cooked? It sounds to me like it should be against the law to take advantage of a drunken bird?

LOL - this thread brought up a buried memory - my next door neighbors when I lived in MD were transplants from WV. Career navy, they'd lived in many places, but still very country roots. Their adult children (a little older than my x-DH & I) lived in southern, rural MD. Every year they had a "road kill" picnic. As in, it was some picnic with all the protein being some kind of wildlife critter - squirrel, possum, who-knows-what. While we dearly loved our neighbors, their kids, grandkids, etc - for some reason - in our 8 years there we always had something come up preventing us from participating in the "critter barbecue" .
