Keep them well dried with rubbing alcohol and do not go swimming for awhile till they are healed. My grandmother did mine, nothing fancy, she threaded a darning needle with silk, held it in the flame of a candle, put a cork behind my ear and shoved the needle through and knotted the silk.

My daughters had them done in Spain when they were about 5 & 6 by the 'woman who pulls the babies out' according to our then neighbour, same technique with a darning needle. My son had been going to have one ear done but he let the girls go first, went pale and decided he was not the earring type lol

Well done, Fran - just keep applying surgical spirit to keep them really free from infection and keep on tirning them!

When I had my ears pierced, they got infected too. So I poured some straight hydrogen peroxide out of the bottle into the bottle cap, then I titled my head to one side and soaked that ear lobe in the peroxide a couple of times a day. It bubbled up very nicely and after awhile bubbled all the infection out. I've had so many surgeries the last 3 years (I took them out and left them out - too much to bother with) so I think I will have to resort to the peroxide trick again. withlove,peg

i have always been very sensitive to ear jewelry and my ears had problems for years. what i you might try if they get very sore is to replace the current studs with titanium and put antibacterial ointment on them everyday instead of alcohol. after using the titanium studs i can now wear jewelry regularly and if they do seem like they are getthing aggravated i just put the studs back in with ointment for a few days.

Congradulations, now some advice. I also had a terrible time and then found out that I have a nickel allergy. Most people who get infected wholes are allergic to what they are wearing. To get around this either get surgical steel posts, buy pairs marked hypo-allergenic, or buy jewelery from simplywhispers.com. I have never, ever had any problems with their jewlery, and they sell the hooks so you can make your own. Not affilated just a customer for at least 15 years. BTW Just buying real gold doesn't always help, since it can have nickel in it.

You are correct. Oddly enough though I have a lovely pair of amethyst earrings my father gave me, set beautifully in platinum, most intricate. I can wear them for max about three hours before my ears feel like they are on fire. They don't turn red or anything, but they feel like they are on fire.

Gold is fine for me but I never attempt anything else, just doesn't work.

Oh - have a similar problem with a pair of antique earrings - try wiping the post down with alcohol before wearing them. I don't know why, but it works long enough to wear them for an evening.

Fran, do you have an aloe plant? I had the same problem when I pierced my ears. One got really sore. After I got it healed with peroxide, I used the fluid in the leaf (spike?) of an aloe plant to dip my posts in. That got rid of all the soreness. Frances

I lost a diamond earring that had been my mothers. Same thing, elaborate setting (she bought them in Hong Kong) and a diamond that had been hand cut as opposed to machine cut as they now do. To replace it cost just under $5000 - the girl pointed out I could have bought a new pair for less. I did it but since the platinum doesn't bother either of my daughters, that would seem very extravagant to just alter them.

Very interesting to read how people react to the different metals. I'm blessed with very sensitive skin and major allergy problems everywhere but my pierced ears. I can't so much as touch most plants without getting a rash and have had my arms or legs blow up to twice their size with something as little as a mosquito bite.

Strange but I can and do wear earrings made of almost everything from dime store junk to platinum and/or gold and my favorite earrings for fun wear are made of sterling. Of course this may be because I had my ears pierced by my family doctor with needle and thread, when I was a teen and have been wearing earrings ever since. Maybe if you wear them for so many years your earlobes get calluses or something like that. Who knows ???? lol

The left ear is healing fine, no problems at all. The right ear is trying very hard to get an infection. I am treating both ears with hydrogen peroxide twice daily, concentrating mostly on the right ear and that does seem to help.

While we are on the topic, does anyone else clean their holes?

I have small, blunt needle in the bathroom along with a skein of white floss. I'll cut about 6-8 inches of the skein. Thread half in the needle and load the tread with alcohol. Then gently thread it through the hole. Repeat with the remaining floss in the other hole.

If I've had to force and earring in, then I will load the bottom half of the thread with polysporin and top with alcohol.

Since I started doing this ( a few years ago), I have a lot less problems with earrings getting that burning feeling a few hours later.

Actually I don't take my earrings out. Sometimes I switch between pairs, but mostly I have about three pairs I wear in rotation. The rotation being when it occurs to me to do it lol
