I resemble that remark. Back when I was pregnant ... DH hadn't cleaned the stove after letting something boil over. I was boiling water to make Jell-O and set the alarm off. BIG family joke that Christmas--I'm such a bad cook I can set off the alarm just making Jell-O!
That's almost as good as one of mine. I've ended up at the ER/Urgent Care twice on "Thanksgiving Eve" for stitches while slicing veggies for my roasted root veggies.

Ah. I had exactly the same experience in the middle of the night while DH was away playing Army games. I nearly called the fire department in frustration. Totally forgot that I had mounted the CO detector on the back of my dresser mirror. I feel for you.

90s when I was living/working in UK & France we didn't so I was always bringing stuff over. And some tea - there's some that we just don't get the same here (regardless of the lovely Teavana shop just near my favorite Nordstroms).Hey, airfares could get reasonable sometime!

OXO mandoline - get it at Bed, Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon. Has a save your fingertips from razoring off holder, and much faster when doing lots of slicing - unless you have Jacques Pepin's knife skills - and even he usues a mandoline. Although, DH winces when I pull it out.

Hmmm, we're probably about the same distance to Nat'l - but it's a heck of lot faster going in on the toll road to parkway, than beating in up 95 ;^) I'll have to check on the map. But you do have the 2 furry big guys, plus...

Mine slices pretty thick - it's adjustable. It's thick enough for awesome waffle cut potatoes. Alternatively, there is the Cuisinart. For my old one (smaller 7 C) I have the full set of slicing and shredding disks. Plus, with the root veggies, put them in sideways, cool long slices.
Besides - fingers, stitches, or slightly thinner veggies? Did you know that the most common ER visit is bagel slicing slices.

No - the slices/cubes need to about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch thick. Any thinner you only taste the olive oil and spices/herb......
Besides, I haven't sliced my hand in about 8 years.....

Not at all. Outings are fun, though I'm not sure if I'd be able to squeeze one in during Nutcracker season. These days I feel like I meet myself coming and going. The only good part is that I can usually get some stitching in while waiting, though occasionally it ends up being costume stitching rather than my own...

We had to take John to hospital a couple of years ago, with a large slice taken from his thumb by a Mandoline - he`s never used it since, thank goodness! He does BLEED so!

That doesn`t surprise me in the least!
I can`t do it very well with one hand. I used the bad hand to just place knuckle down on the Bagel to hold it steady. Seeing that the darmed things have a hole in the middle, I was forever in danger of slicing my knuckles! (That`s not intended as a "Poor me", by the way, - just an explanation! LOL!)
One of the best things I ever got was a Bagel slicer/Guillotine. The only trouble is that I have to fiddle around a bit to get it lined up right - our Bagels aren`t as big as yours. My favourite is Cinnamon and Raisin
