OT: Update on Aaron - and thank you all for your prayers.

I want to thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts, and kindness that you have sent our way.

To all of you, God Bless and keep you for all your support and most especially prayers for Aaron.

We just had a very good visit with Aaron.

His brain is still swollen, we can see the bulge still where the piece of skull was removed. His pressures however, are good. He does have another infection and fever, they have cultured and will start more antibiotics when they know what he has. The doctor says these are normal, and does not seem unduly concerned. If his ICP stays down and his CPP stays up, they may be able to remove the drain and Camino monitor from his brain in 4 or 5 days. Maybe.

The won't be able to do the tracheostomy until Monday at the earliest, since they can't get his "PEEPs" down enough yet. I've learned more about head and brain trauma than I've ever wanted to know.

ICPs, CPPs, and all the other stuff.......

This morning, the social worker discussed the difference between reflex and purposeful movements.

Having him squeeze our hands "on command", and he squeezes, would be a reflex.

Telling him to move his thumb and have him move it, that would be purposeful.

Tonight, he was really working to stay awake. He kept opening his eyes and looking at us, although not really focusing. He is still on heavy, heavy sedation, and will be for some time.

He would squeeze our hands (not very strongly, but a squeeze anyway), and I asked him to wiggle his thumb, and HE DID! He wiggled his thumb, then when I told him to wiggle his other thumb, he wiggled that one too.

So, he had purposeful movement on both sides, ALLELUIA!!!!

Also, as we were getting ready to leave, after our prayers, I squeezed his right hand really hard. He winced, and I asked him if his hand hurt when I squeezed it, and he gave the littlest nod of his head and squeezed his other hand. We had asked the hospital to xray his hand the other night, since it has been swollen, and they said there were no broken bones. But apparently, it must be sprained or something, because it is sore.

The important thing though, is that he could communicate to me that it IS sore.

Thank you again for all you have done and all your support and prayers. The prayers are really working, we are seeing each every day.

Love you all, Deb

How grand to have some really positive news!! I have been wondering, how old is Aaron, Deb?? Not that it matters, but just for a picture in my mind. You and he have been in my thoughts so much these days.

Deb, I haven't seen your original post, but wanted to let you know that my nephew was in a car wreck a couple of years ago and had brain injury with part of his skull removed too. He is now doing really well. The graft of his skull fragment didn't "take" when they put it back in and they had to go with plastic instead, but he's back at work and is a walking miracle! Hang in there! It was really tough and it took a long time for him to recover, but he's been back at work for about a year now! Kim
