OT: Where will the Evacuees GO??

A student from the next block is in a similar situation. He was about to start his fourth year at University of New Orleans in a five-year marine architecture program. I'm told there are only three such programs in the U.S.: New Orleans, the Naval Academy, and U. of Michigan. He's taken refuge with his grandmother 250 miles from N'Awlins, and is enrolling in a local college just to keep going, but will either have to change his career path or hope that U of Michigan is able and willing to essentially double their student pool in that program. (It's unlikely the Naval Academy can absorb fourth-year, solely academic students).

It depends on what type of aid they were awarded. If it was federal aid (Pell Grant, federal loans, etc.), that money is portable (except for a couple of campus-based federal programs) and will go with the student. If the student received an institutional scholarship, probably not.

Today's Beacon Journal had an article about an area freshman engineering student who had a $22,000 scholarship for Tulane. He was down there for one day when he was told he could either get on a bus and go to Miss. St. or head back home. He figured it would be a 3-day evacuation so just took the minimum gear and went to MSU. Now he is back home and enrolled as a transient student locally. Since he is just a freshman, there are plenty of general education classes he can take that should transfer in to his program.

The president of Hiram College says they will take displaced students until the dorms are full and he is > My impression is that it's not anything like that.

According to today's paper, 4 plane loads (app. 500-600) people will arrive here in Knoxville, TN today. I'm sketchy about exactly where they will be housed but the community, from what I've read and heard, is ready, willing, and able to do whatever needs to be done.

LOL, Yeah, they probably will! It's starting to cool down up here and has been in the 40s a couple nights in the past week. Sounds nice to me but I can only imagine the Suthunas' reaction to it. :) At least we have decent insulation in the homes up here!!! :)

I just might do that! I haven't seen GWTW for about 20 years and have only seen SM once.

BTW, there was a local family who, during our flood, had gone to stay with family in NO. Now that family is up here and their kids have been enrolled in school! Strange how things happen....

That was such a big event we had quite a long report on it even over here.

Wow, I'm a UM alum and didn't realize they had such a program. My hunch would be that with such a limited pool of universities, things might well work out that UM would absorb *both* the faculty *and* the students from UNO, and thus have the resources to handle the additional students. The tricky bit would be getting everyone housed and such-- I don't know if student enrollment is high or low at the moment, so I don't know if they're short of on- or off-campus housing.

Best wishes, Ericka
