VBS -- it's a semantics thing. British people are from Great Britain, Chinese people from China, Canadian people from Canada, American people from America, French people from France -- all nations of the world you can find on a map. There is no place or nation or country to be found on a map with the name "Jew" so that people from that nation would be called Jewish. There is a religion that is called Jewish and since biblical times, the people of the Jewish faith have told the world that their country, their nation, is Israel -- whether it was on a map or not. Thousands of years of tradition and habitation go a long way towards legitimizing a nation whether it is found on a map or not. Like I said, a semantics thing and one of my pet peeves -- like people saying that someone from Italy are EYEtalian. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

True, just like "the nation of Islam". Those people all have a "cultural" nation. If asked what nationality they are, they will usually say, Russia, Syria, England, China -- or at least the Jews and Islamics will. I don't think the Roma really have any affiliation with an established nation or country that could be found on a map. HMMMM, I don't know a lot about the Roma -- for those who don't know, these are people commonly refered to as Gypsies but this is considered to be a pejorative term by them. A question -- do the Roma have their own established faith like the Jews and Islamics do? I'm not talking about a culturally specific form of one or more "traditional" religions. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Or the one for musicians with a picture of Schwarzenegger in a baroque wig. The caption said. "I'll be Bach"

If you're going to get picky about it, these are not nations but rather a list of states and their citizens. Great Britain includes Welsh and Scotts people, for example, even though they are all citizens of the UK. France includes Basque, Bretons, Alsatians, etc, even though they all have French citizenship. The situation is much more complex than you have portrayed it here with the lines between ethnic groups and nations being very hard, sometimes, to distinguish.

I gave one to my friend, Muso, (a baroque organist) which had a pic of Bach and the caption 'Bach in ten minuets'.

The Roma folk generally take on the faith of the country or region they live in. AFAIK, they don't have a characteristic religion, although their culture (being so ancient) has many traditions and prescriptions that are kind of religious in flavour. It's well worth reading about the Roma, because they've been much-maligned and misunderstood through the centuries. I can recommend a trilogy of films by Tony Gatlif: 'Latcho Drom', 'The Prince' and 'Gadjo Dilo'. All three are excellent illustrations of Romani life (although I've only seen highlights of 'The Prince'). Latcho Drom is absolutely brilliant as it traces the migration of the Roma from Rajasthan as far as western Europe!

I had one of those many, many years ago: God said, "div D = rho, div B = 0, curl E = - @B/@t, curl H = J + @D/@t" and there was light

Many `British` people i know call themselves English ,Scotish , wellsh etc,,, not British ,,,,

yes But the french Canadians don`t live in French Canda ? Do they ? the Dutch Don`t live in Deuchland=3DFermany , but in Holland or Nederland ..you still call them Dutch and not Nederlanders.

the Roma Are wandering people they don`t live in Roma nore Romia. How do you callthe people of Mauritzius ??? there are nations and tribes who name isn`t connected to a Geographical name ,,,,

people from that nation would be called Jewish.

BUT FOR THE JEWS there is such a place !!!! , the word Jew isn`t our Original name , but is an English form of our HEBREW [and correct name] Jehudiem , [plular , Jehudi singular ] Becuase we Come from JEHUDAH =3Dwhich the Romans transalted into Judea , the Greek translated it into Joudaios, while they translated the name of the Part of the country Around Yerushalayim , into Judeah, !!!! if you look at the country you will see the Nmaes Jehudah and Israel !!!!on ancient maps !!!!

Please read the scriptures better !!!!! King salomom , king David where from the TRIBE of JEHUDA , And Ruled over Jehuda and Israel.

whether it

The Romans sent the Jehudiem from Jehuda , and even Made a Special coin/Medal that had the Inscription JUDEA CAPTA [ Jehudah Captured] ... Translating the word Jehudi into the english jew doesn`t take away our connection to this ground.

I guess I'd always assumed (yeah, yeah, I know...that's a dangerous thing to do), rightly or wrongly, that the term Jewish came from the people of Judea.

Could I *possibly* have assumed something correctly for once? ;)

Are you trying to poison the poor, underprivileged polar bears. I would think they might get hungry and then you know what might happen.

Now if you want to drop them into an iceberg, being sure it's one that won't thaw for tens of thousands of years, that might be a different story.

No. It is not at all like the nation of Islam.

In the five years that I lived in Europe, I never heard a Jew say that they were German or Polish or Belgian. They all said that they were Jewish.

Exactly my point, but they are a nation.

Do they have a religious practice? Yes. Is it "established?" No. Are you trying to project your own cultural norm on another people?

Victoria and Trish, While i agree that criminals should be treated for the social and psychological problems , i still insist on my opinion , that one should NOT feel compassion for them or their actions. If you feel compassion , for a Criminal or Terror action , you are accepting it as an Action that is Ok , that is acceptable. You give more power and Justification , to their doing such actions. And i also wanted to remind you that not All criminals and terrorists come from Poor backgrounds , some come from Rich Good social backgrounds .. mirjam

I didn't say they came from poor backgrounds, I said they came from feral backgrounds. I understand that you feel as you do about criminal actions, but I'm afraid I can't agree with you. That's fine. I don't expect you to agree with me either. Yes indeed, many criminals and terrorists come from what we might call good backgrounds. We don't know what makes people go off the rails, but I, myself, personally do not believe that human beings are 'born' to kill, maim and mutilate. I believe in the good potential of all. Call me Pollyanna if you like, but that's what I believe. I'm not asking you to change your mind, BTW.

You aren't an United Statesian because you live in the United States of AMERICA so are called an American. I am a Catholic, Irish-American so I have one "cultural" nationality (Irish-American), one "religious" nationality (Catholic) and one "physical" (for want of a better word) nationality -- American. I was born and raised in this country so that is my physical nationality and PHYSICAL nationality is what I have been talking about. CiaoMeow >^;;^<
