teacher gifts

I don't know how many of you make gifts for your kids (or grandkids) teachers. I do it every year, for Christmas and end of the year -- and at the GK's request, I even did Halloween ghosties this year.

Anyhow, since Hailey (oldest gk) has 4 teachers now, this whole thing was getting out of hand.

I looked through some very old stash and found a chart for a Christmas ornament that is just a ball with the center left blank, for a name or date, and the loop on the top is done with metallic floss.

I stitched those in about a day, all five of them, and then spent about another hour putting "2005" on them.

I found the cutest mats at Hobby Lobby, very Christmasy, and got some pretty stands, attached the fabric to the back of the mats, and then put sticky-back white felt on the back to finish them.

Very cute, not expensive -- I didn't have to have them framed, or even do a great deal of stitching. And I'm done already, even before Thanksgiving!

Sounds really cute. Could you describe the mats? Paper? Matboard? What shape? I need to get cracking on making ornaments for each of my gks. Thanks, Rachel in Scottsdale

The mats were found in the framing section of Hobby Lobby -- a couple were the word "JOY" , with the O cut out to be the hole in the mat. A couple were snowflakes, and one was a prettily shaped ornament. They were all double matted, and very attractive.

If you'd like to see them made up, I'll be glad to send you a private email with an attached picture.

I used to make gifts for my son's elementary school teachers at Christmas and the end of the school year. My guys are now 21 and 24, so no more gifts.

I'm hearing that in our School District a lot of teachers are requesting no gifts from the students and ask for a charitable donation instead. For instance, a little 7 yr. old I know has had her teacher request donations to the SPCA. The teacher keeps a jar on her desk for the donations. The kids are very excited to help take care of "orphaned pets" :)

take care, Linda

What a good idea. I wonder about suggesting it at a PTA meeting.

My kids' teachers have always done a group gift to a local senior center, or asked for gifts for the classroom (how many xmas ornaments does a teacher need?). I usually give books to the classroom library.

This year the 3d grade class is asking everyone to bring in a wrapped shoebox and some little gifts (unwrapped) appropriate for senior citizens. The kids are going to pool the gifts and sort them into the boxes so everyone will have a box full of little gifts.
