8-pointed star

I did the 8-pointed star last night for my sampler quilt..what a pain! at least the way my instructor had us do it..but then I was looking in my quilting book and there seems to be a much easier way to do it..wondering if this was another right of passage thing or just her preference in doing it that way..in my book you do the star first and then seam-in the squares and triangles..instructor had us sew on the triangles and squares first...will try again tonight so it will be ready for my class on Thursday..

also..I want to do a applique' pillow using sunbonnet sue..I want to use a blanket stitich around her but I want the top of the pillow to be a little puffy..should I put batting behind the applique before I stitch then make the pillow...sorry for my lack of knowledge..

You might want to add an extra layer of batting (or two) by using monofilament on the top and your background color in the bobbin. Do an "in the ditch" stitching (straight stitch) around your appliqué using a smaller than usual stitch length. Then trim all the excess batting away. This is the way I do it when I want to "punch up" an area of appliqué on a wall hanging or pillow.
