A cool tip

I was watching The Quilt Show online the other day and the featured teacher was Elsie Campbell. She does a lot of hand work. There are times when doing hand (or machine work) when you need to measure the 1/4" from the corners. She sticks a piece of quarter inch tape to her thumbnail to use as the "ruler". Very cool. She just lays her thumbnail against the block and pins. No picking up a ruler or eyeballing it. This probably isn't a surprise to some....but I'd never seen it done before. Some people are so smart!

Brilliant! Kathyl. That would be especially handy for on-the-road needlework when you might not have a ruler handy. Polly

That is a great tip. Worth passing on to my hand sewers at club! Thankyou.

I read about this somewhere when I was trying to get better at hand sewing eyeballing a 1/4 inch. I did actually have this tape on my thumb while stitching, not sure how much it helped me really. I seem to remember it kept coming off, which might not have helped :-) But for the occasional "I need to check this", it is a neat idea.

She makes beautiful quilts too. We were lucky enough to have her give a trunk show at our guild last year.

Very nice lady.

The nail on my little finger is very close to 1/4" wide -- and I always have it with me :)

Ok...so how many people have gone to measure their little finger nail??? (mine is just a bit bigger than 1/4") :)

I haven't measured my fingernail yet, but I do know a bunch of other measurements that I take with me everywhere: The end of my pinky is one inch long, my hand span is 8 inches long. Makes measuring much easier - especially when my husband says "Honey, how long do you think this is?"

(Don't go there, trust me, it isn't worth it!)
