Challenge.

Its that time of year again when I have to come with a club challenge. We did Self Portrait last time.( I cant remember who suggested that, but thanks)We have done Seaside and Country, all the colour themes. I could think of a Nursery Rhyme or song. Anyone have any bright ideas. I need them for thursday!!TIA

How about a favourite poem? Weather? A place that has special meaning to the quilter?

hi, estelle! what about a Round Robin, or color theme such as: black, white and "red" allover?, or tropical theme, maybe even sport theme. or just have someone "in charge" pick a challenge fabric as the focus fabric and give everyone a fat quarter. then each person in the group has to make a block with that fabric (block pattern choice is theirs) and include up to 3 of their own fabric. just remember to instruct that the finished blocks should all be the same size. amy

Well, here on RCTQ a few years ago we did: Favourite Poem. A group I belonged to for a little while did: Song with Blue in the title. And what about :Variations on a Block eg a curvy 9-patch; or a Storm at Sea with the usual colour placement changed, so that it looks completely different? Several ways of interpreting 'Square in a Square'.

Has that started the thinking juices going?!! . In message , Estelle Gallagher writes

Our guild has one going now (haven't seen any quilts yet!) that is titled...

"my "suhn-dey" best" quilt.

use "suhn - dey" however you wish... SUN day (as in sunny day, SUNDAY (day of the week), SON day (celebrating baby boys), SUNdae (yum yum).

We were given a fat quater of fabric we had to use at least a 9" x 9" square's worth (81 square inches) on the front of the quilt. It will be fun to see what people come up with!

I've got a few in my files....

Favorite book - I've seen this done where the person does anything to represent their favorite book and others where the person replicates the actual book cover artwork.

Fun saying - make a quilt to represent all those expressions: a rolling stone gathers no moss, a stitch in time saves nine and so on. The one I read about they drew the sayings out of a hat.

Block to match your name - I read about this one where people made a block whose name started with the first letter of their first name. So, Estelle could make "Eight pointed star" or "Egg basket" or an "Elephant block". You get the idea.

A few years ago, we had a challenge here on RCTQ that involved food.

I was going to suggest an Ugly Fabric challenge or with positive thinking 'Make me beautiful' where you are given a fabric in a colour you hate and have to use it to make something that you like in the end.... You need to be a bit of both sadistic.. (to hand a piece of fabric to someone you know will hate it) and masochistic (being willing to undertake such a challenge. :) Elly

Yes, that was a good challenge. I did: 'Where the blue of the night meets the gold of the day'. . In message , Estelle Gallagher writes

Here in my guild, the challenges with the most participation were traditional in nature (block or color assignments) rather than thematic. Examples of very popular ones:

*Log Cabin, any style *Basket Block, to include some yellow fabric and some green fabric any where on the quilt *M&M candy colors ... must include at least one piece of each of the 6 basic colors! (For this one, we received a small packet of the colors AND a packet of m&ms candy! We paid a fee.) A popular one was "my initial quilt" which required at least one block that started with the quilt maker's own first initial. (My Initial is P, so I made Pinwheel Blocks.) HTH. PAT in VA/USA

did it also have to do with making a quilt? Of just collecting, ingesting or some other "food" situation!

I know who might win the "I've got more chocolate than you award!" lOL

The wall hanging had to picture food, use some kind of food fabric or both. The other requirement was that at least one of the fabrics had to have been obtained through an RCTQ swap.

There are three unusual challenges from our on-line mystery quilter`s guild on my site: click on Mystery quilters, then select `Challenges.` My favourite -- and I`ve done it three times with three different groups-- is the Potluck challenge

`s a fun challenge at several stages, from picking the ``food`` fabric tothe china to the finished quilt. In my books, the big bonus is that it`svery beginner-friendly, and not so daunting for new quilters as some of themore common challenges. Kim Graham
