coming up for air

Morning everyone

Haven't posted or even managed to read much for the past three weeks or so. Things have been totally out of whack here recently. Life has a way of hitting you in the face HARD.

My mom (65 years old) was diagnosed with colon cancer on January 18 (took about a week for all the results to come in), out of the blue, without any symptoms of any kind. We went in to see the surgeon on Jan

22, did a CT-scan right after seeing the surgeon, got the results of the CT back on the 25 showing three large liver lesions, went back to the surgeon and surgery was scheduled for the 29th.The idea was to remove the tumor and the three liver lesions. Surgery took place as scheduled, but unfortunatley not with the expected results; tumor was very large an infiltrative with multiple mets in lymph glands and liver (in addition to the three large ones already seen before). So that was a big shock. She is now having to undergo chemotherapy; starts the first of 12 planned cycles tomorrow. Please pray that she responds! She's way too young!!

Sorry to have to come back to the group with such sad news.

My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer back in 1996 - the tumor was so large they could not operate and it was wrapped around her spine. They also mentioned spots on the liver, etc. The doctors basically told her that she was going to die. But she did have radiation and then chemo. She was pretty sick, and had a colostomy bag to deal with as well. But the next year they discovered that the tumor had basically disappeared. They were able to operate and remove the last bits. The also undid the colostomy and reconnected everything. Her doctor said she had had a very advanced case of cancer, the most advanced case of cancer he had ever seen in a person who survived. But she did, and she is now 85 years old and still going. Here's hoping your mom will beat it too.
