We had a similar run-in with our insurance company regarding the fact they wanted to total the car. They go by an industry guide that does not necessarily correlate to real-life values. The auto shop helped us provide them with a better value of the car's condition prior to the accident. We also researched similar vehicles for sale and the going price. With that information in hand, we were able to prove that the value of our car was greater than their "book value". This then lowered the damage to value ratio and brought it below the threshold they use to total a car.

You may need to provide them with all your recent repair receipts. This is commonly done among our VW camper community when somebody's bus is in an accident. Try it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Pati, I am sorry to hear about your car troubles. I know how that goes, if something happened to mine I would be out of luck for sure.

I agree with Pati - look into this more. One of my co-workers hit a deer with his 8-yr old Volvo, and the insurance company totalled it; because it was 8 yrs old he was allowed to keep the car, so he used the insurance money to fix the car & he even had some $$ left over. As long as the car passes inspection, NYS will allow it to be registered even if it was totalled in the past... the car is fixed and he's driving it.

Trying some transatlantic positive thoughts for you, Pati. What a worry for you. I do hope it all works out well. Don't force yourself to work, while you feel like this. Chances are you might not like what you do - once all is sorted out. So, don't waste your time. Try to do useful things, but not terribly important. I have some inkling of how you must be feeling. My last car dropped its gearbox outside Tesco's and died there and then. Okay, I was towed to the garage and they drove me home, but that was that. No car, no transport, prospect of mega-bill either for new innards (car was OLD) or new car (you're joking!)

Came out all right in the end, thanks to a generous Mum. However, I sympathise with you. Hold on in there and sting the bumper-man's insurance for a new car if they total it!

That's a great point, Irene. Most states allow this, and if the repairs end up being less than the check you get, all the better!

wow, they let you keep the car and pay you for the value before totalled. geez, dd had her car stolen from in front of the house. insurance towed from the original towing yard to the mechanic/body shop. insurance decided it was totalled too. insurance gets to keep the car and paid us the value pre-theft. then they sell it for whatever they can get for it to offset their payout to us. it was worth more than that to us than they paid cuz we'd also had a new engine put in it only 6 months prior to that. we were not amused but not a damn thing we could do bout it. if it is repairable and they pay you and let you keep the car, could be not soooo bad. good luck, Pati. jeanne
