You do get the fabric calculation done if, for instance, you get the pattern from a book or a magazine. But, if you invent, than you have to work it out, too! . In message , fixedgearhead writes
After reading the previous replies, no one mentioned the FabriCalc calculator. It has the capability of doing a lot of the math mentioned just by entering the sizes/numbers of shapes and telling you how much yardage that will take. It also will do the reverse, tell you how many of a certain size shape you can get from a given amount of fabric. Wonderful gadget for those so inclined. I got one and am trying to learn to use it for the patterns I am designing. Hope that eventually it will save me time.
Yes, having left over fabric is the start of a stash. Keep building it or give it away or????? Have fun with it all. (BTW if you use parts of it to practice free motion quilting, quick bind those and use them for pet quilts, or some such. Someone will like to have them somewhere. If you use a couple layers of cotton batting in them, cut them into potholders and bind them. At least around here potholders get dirty, scorched/burned and so on and can always be used.)

Have any "in progress" pictures of your current piecing?
And when I still sewed clothing, I usually ended up with a quarter yard or more left over! So the pattern makers were obviously either in cahoots with fabric makers or trying to make foolproof instructions. That's actually how I got sucked into quilting, trying to use up all those leftovers! Roberta in D
