FQ dilemma

I have been given the most beautiful FQ I have ever seen -- big, loose cream flowers on bright red with lime green/spring green leaves and stems and veins i nthe flowers. I don't want to cut this up, and there is no chance of ever getting any more. It's out of print, etc.

So what do I do with just one gorgeous FQ? I don't want it to go play with others in little pieces, I want this to look at. Is there a pattern that centers on one FQ and gives it a background to play in?

Can you treat it like a painting or photograph and just frame it with some beautiful borders?

Fold it into an envelope-style clutch or small shoulder bag, line it, and carry it proudly?

Cushion front?

Surrounded by squares of coordinating solids and made into a table topper?

Make a border/s for it. You can make an extravagant PFP border with lots of pointy spikes or spikey points (VBG), or a simple 9 patch (or other) pieced border or an appliqued border picking up the cream flowers in the applique. Or go really wild and make an applique border with vines and 3D flowers and leaves. These are really easy... you make the flowers and leaves then squirt some glue on the back and stick 'em in place. It's really not much like what you think of as applique. Have fun!

PS: Never say never- you may find some more of the fabric on this very group! Got a photo we can see?

Gather more "too pretty to cut" fabrics and make the BQ quilt (7th quilt from the top on this page).

Or just make one of the blocks and either frame it or make a pillow. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I saw a beautiful idea with some of those lovely Japanese panels (perhaps here - must have been?). Square up the fat quarter and cut it into four equal pieces (they don't have to be square if you don't want to lose any of it at all). Then make the window frame of four Attic Windows and hang it as a wallhanging just like that. It will look like a little window looking out onto a gorgeous shrub. . In message , Sunny writes

Wow! Nice Link! I like the "Frames" pattern and the "Spotlight" one as well. I have some nice FQ's from my 5 years ago trip to Hawaii that would work well with those patterns. Thanks for the link.

That's a nice way of using larger prints.

Yeah, I got lots of big prints so I learned where I could get a lot of different quilts that use them well. Debra in VA See my quilts at

go down the list of patterns until you find the one named "frames" if you enlarge the picture, there is a variation on the bottom left side that would frame a nice fat quarter nicely.
