The Insane Hexagon Project

well it needed a name and this fits best LOL

so far this week I have received a grand total of 9 envelopes in the mail! amazingly despite now having about 800 different fabrics I haven't received any duplicates from different people yet! Everyone I have received from has been sent a note letting you know it's arrived so if you haven't heard anything yet then it's not here yet :-) this past week has been like Christmas *and* my birthday all rolled into one with all the squishes to open!

I have added a photo folder to my photo's on yahoo so you can see my progress - the first photo's are up with the nearly 200 hexagons I have basted and sewn into groups of 3 (now all are joined yet though) if you click on the photo's you can see the captions I have added ;-)

thanks to all who are helping me do this!

Insane is the correct term. How big is each hexagon?

I have officially put that project on my 'never gonna get it done' list, along with cathedral window and yoyo quilt

they are 1" sided hexagons - I will be using a total of 3899 different fabrics if all goes to plan as I'm making a queen sized quilt this is my second hexagon project so I know what I'm getting myself into

I agree Joan...put my name down on that same "never gonna do it" pledge.

Three cheers for you Jessamy! And what color would you like us to paint the wall of your room at "the home"? Your color sorting looks great! Do you still need fabrics? What colors seem to be missing?

Thanks :-) I'm thinking a bright yellow or orange as they are always small rooms and need a bit of brightness hehehe.

I have about 800 of the 3899 I need so.... yes I would be thrilled to get more!

At this time any of the following colours : red/orange/yellow/white/beige/brown/black/grey/blue/green with a smallish print or TOT's. though a well cut section from a large print would work if it's mainly one colour :-) Size is 2 1/2 inch square (but I don't mind trimming scraps!) pre-washed or not prewashed scrunched up or pressed smoking and pets are no problem either :-)

there that just about sums it all up ;-)

As long as neither the fabric, nor the pets are smoking, I presume?

(Sorry, couldn't help it).

How are you preparing your hexagons? I am making something similar and I started with English paper piecing, basting the fabric to paper. Now I am using a glue stick to attach to the paper. It is a slow project because I rarely work on it.

since the papers are just 1 inch I am folding over the fabric and doing a back stitch on each corner to keep the corners pointy - the middle bit keeps in place nicely and by not going through the paper I keep things fast and easy when it's time to remove the papers :-)

it's something I do on the sofa in the evening during the 7-19 minute ad time (fortunately only 3 times an hour not every 5 mins LOL) and if the show isn't as interesting I do more and I take it along with me so I have something to do during oldest DS's swimming lessons

I did that the first time and hated having to add all the background hexagons hence the decision to have *no* background this time hehehe

I'd love to see butterfly's quilt but sadly it's hidden from view or not there anymore :-(

I have learnt I like English paper piecing, that and mola's are the only handwork I do.

thanks :-)

omg, jess, that is gonna be one gorgeous quilt girl. i dont see a problem with that print you pointed out in pix #5. seems to fit in just fine, gives the whole thing some spark, gotta have some spark, eh. dont forget when you get to the greens... :) four of them together look much like a big leaf. the rest looks to me like a big old garden full of various coloured flowers so a few leaves here and there poking thru from the back might look right noice (sic). ok ok, so thats just my opinion but hey, when was i ever humble with you. :)) great work, i'm very proud of you for how you manage to do so much and also raise two wee lads pretty much single handedly. big hugz, jeanne

thanks Jeanne :-) I only just started doing greens so only have 5 or so basted - I have at least 15 LIME greens on the pile though >:) I don't really want to start making a kind of "background" which is what the "leaves" would become. nope you never are but I loves ya anyways >:D<

aww shucks I just either sew or clean HAHAHA - late;ly I have been cleaning more than sewing as the bright spring sunshine showed me that my "clean" kitchen was actually rather grubby - ex actually managed to compliment me on that for a change LOL I too am rather busy with life outside the computer - sewing, house and kids and soon the garden too - right after the spring clean that is! (((HUGS)))) and hang on in there life will return to predicable boringness soon enough ;-)

Do you have any photos of your Molas? I have only seen the works of the Cuna Indians. The women wear them on their blouses - truly colorful. I have thought of attempting to do one myself someday.

i think reverse applique is easier in some ways than regular 'on top' applique is. tho could be how i was doing it, perhaps not the usual way at all. who knows. jeanne

That's good to know. I'm just about to try some for a challenge! Never done the reverse kind before (though since I'm a perverse kind of character, it should have been easy >gi think reverse applique is easier in some ways than regular 'on top'

Howdy!

B-fly's quilt is in the Other People's Quilts folder; sometimes the link just doesn't work (I'm sure it's my fault for having more than 1 yahoo acct)

snipped-for-privacy@sbcglobal.net/albums I didn't use any paper piecing techniques, just made tiny running stitches to connect the hexagons. Insane? Well, yes, but I can't blame it all on the quilting. ;-D

do be sure to ask again for fabric, I didn't respond at the last request, because most of the scraps I had lieing around were smaller than that, but even since then, I've accquired some bigger scraps, so if you ask again in a month or so, I should be able to put a bundle together.
