I'm so excited!

I can finially get started on sashing the last of the quilt tops for my grandchildren. The fabric I chose to use on my youngest grandson's quilt top was next to impossible to find. Of course it was a JoAnn exclusive and just about every store in my area was out of it. I finally called the closest store to me and had them do the foot work and find it for me. Fortunately a store about

20 miles had a few yards of it left. It was the only store with any between where I live in Michigan and Chicago. With me not driving I had to become innovative. My Physical Therapist, thank God also has patients in the same are as the store with the fabric and bless his heart he picked it up for me yesterday and brought it to me! I am so excited!!! So tomorrow morning the plan is to begin cutting 2" strips to go between the 7" blocks that I made. (56 blocks). Each one is a different muscle car. The sashing fabric is a black checkered flag background with tires. I knew it was the perfect fabric when I first got what I could get. I also figured in right away that if I couldn't get any more of it I would us it as a boarder instead of sashings. I am just so excited. Once I get this last top sewn together then I can begin quilting them. Maybe now I will have the 3 of them done before Christmas. julia

What a very special PT. How wonderful. You ARE going to do something nice for him like bring him a banana nutbread aren't you? Recipe available upon request. Polly

I am fixing to start sewing my squares together for my first quilt. It is going to be a very simple 4 sq. block, each block will have 3 different Mickey Mouse fabrics and one almost solid it has a faded looking color to it. The sashing and maybe the binding will be yellow and the backing, at this time is going to be the main Mickey Mouse pattern, or should I say the one that is most pronounced, this way it can be used on either side if needed. I had planned on sewing my 4 squares together to make the block then add the sashing to it as I went? Is this wrong? I think it is going to have corner stones also, probably in a black, but since Julia said I am ready to start on the sashing, I am now wondering if I should make all the 4 square blocks then add the sashing after all squares are made? Lordy willing and the creek doesn't rise, I am going to start on this tomorrow. Oh one more question for the sewing of the blocks is it ok to use a standard needle? I am going to be doing machine sewing not hand by any means.

Jacqueline who is still excited just had some set backs in getting ready for this new adventure. Oh and these are precut squares of 5" which means I am going to only have a 7.5 inch block.

Thanks in advance, you all will probably get to see my first block, my second block and so on. LOL I just can't wait. Please pray that tomorrow I get started.

Sashing is not really 'framing' (which is what you would do if you put sashing around each block). You *can* do some as you go, but just put a strip at each side. Once those are joined you can put long strips between each row. . In message , Jacqueline writes

No, not wrong. My preferred method is to but the sashing strips on two adjacent sides (left and top) When you put the blocks together everything is sashed except the right side of the quilt and the bottom. I just add long sashing strips on those sides. Some people are more organized than I am and add strips to the right side and bottom blocks as they do the block but that takes too much thinking for me. :-)

I think it is going to have corner stones also,

Oh, well, you can do the same thing as described above and just add the corner stones in there. Or, you can do the whole shebang...sashing and corner stones as part of the top assembly when you put the blocks together

but since Julia said I am ready to start on the

Yep. Piecing can be done with a plain old needle. I like size 70 since I sew with thin thread, but 80 is fine for thicker thread.

This is my preferred method, too, mainly because it makes matching corners SO much easier. I've passed this secret on to several of my quilting customers and they all love it.

What timing...I just finished a quilt top and the sashing gave me all kinds of problems...so was going to ask everyone about their sashing methods and what they do to get the corners aligned....and here is your post!

So now I have a new method to try on the next quilt......thanks, Marcella and Kathy!
