machine trapunto cushion back help needed

i nearly put wanted but thot, nope i need'em as i cant think well yet.

for some odd reason i got in the mood to sew. went round the hem on a tea towel that had one side coming loose. fixed the back of a bra that was in strife. all better now tho now i feel compelled to wear one, ewwww, oh well. keeps'em up where they belong, eh. :)

now i'm in the mood for adding a back to a 16inch block that needs some purpose and is all finished being quilted (was gonna be a small wallhanging but now i want it to be a cushion cover).

i think i want the back to be two units, one 16 x 6 and one 16 x 10. each side machine trapunto'd. smaller one a stem with leaves on it. larger one a simple chrysanthemum (small circle with 3 rows of petals around) and a leaf on two corners. the middles will have to overlap enough so the cushion wont show thru if that makes sense and is it possible with machine trapunto? hmmmm. so the overlap makes the finished 'visible' size what i put above.

where do i start? the trapunto wont be at the edge of the piece cuz they wont meet but overlap, oh dear, i just cant figure this out right now. i do need some assistance. if anyone has any ideas, please put them here so i can get this thing done. have moved all the 'stuff' off the cutting mat and then realized i had no idea just what sizes to cut. oh sure, i could do just plain muslin back, no trapunto but i do so like a reversible design, dont you? gives ya some variety in life. so any ideas? wobbly brained in the south pacific, j.

maybe i should just go take a nap?

Good grief, Jeanne. That's worse than trying to herd cats. Would you pul-eeze just make two cushions? So glad you've reported in. Don't make me come down there. Polly

sorry, Polly, i only have one cat so we dont need to herd her. we do however have a resident bird who must of fallen out of his nest when younger or somehow got his tail feathers clipped and now mostly hops around the yard, helping himself to the food after our cat has had her fill. he does herd other birds away from his food bowl. if that counts.

now then about the cushions. i have another one that is finished machine trapunto'd but the wrong size to use as the back for this one. it will be made into a cushion cover too...in time. now i want this one figure'd out. sorry i'm just coherent enough yet to work this one out. feel free to come on down. :) the spare/guest room is ready for ya.

Hi Jeanne - this would work quite easily if you use the 'underlap' trapuntoed with the stem and leaves - increase the length of the stem so that it extends further than you probably thought. The upper section with the flower petals can finish as close to the edge as you want - there won't be any un-trapuntoed section since the two backing design segments don't have to line up at all. jennellh

where i'm lost(i think) is how to put this all together neatly. thunk'n outloud so bear with me....

i want the edges of the two units neat. so on each unit using a piece of muslin double the finished length (lets say 16 x 20 and 16 x 12, argh, need extra for the overlap and seams of course)... i do the first layer of trapunto, cut off the excess batting, add full layer of batting, fold excess fabric back over that batting, trapunto over the design again (used water soluble on first trapunto of course, not on this layer). do this on both units, then lay them right sides together with the pieced/quilted original block, sew round the edges, turn rightside out and its done. hmmmm, sound easy enough. cept i didnt allow for any overlap there. hmmmmmm so i'll make the smaller unit bigger, rather than 16 x 6, i'll do it

16 x 10(finished size, cut fabric double that in length so 16 x 20, i hope), same as the other one, cool, i can do that. whewwww. then do i have to also batt and quilt the whole width, as only 6 inches will show the other 4 inches will be underneath. want to see a scan of my drawing? i will put it on webshots in a second. then maybe it will make more sense. i'm sure i'm rambling badly and not coherently much at all either. send in the cats.... j.

scanned, propertys adjusted for pixel size, uploaded to webshots. whewwwww, fwiw. j.

Jeanie,

You could put a small border around the small block tomake it large enough and to finih off the cusion, you could always have it open one end and use ribbon ties to close it.

I made a cusion cover for my DD and of course, misjudged the size of the insert when measure for the crossover on the cover. It didn't fit neatly so I sewed ribbon to the bottom on both edges and just tied it off. Looks great and quite decorative.

Hope that makes sense.

hey, Di. the plan is to do the two back overlapped units in plain muslin and machine trapunto the design on each side. no colours, no blocks, just the plain fabric with the design showing in trapunto. so i dont really need to add anything around the edges per se.

i checked the cushion i thot the front 16inch block would fit and it is perfect. so its only the back pieces i need to work out what size to cut as my starting point.

so far, i've figured i'll need some overlap and as the plan is one side bigger finished at 10 inch, smaller side finished at 6 inch (that totals 16, eh? lol, just checking). i'm gonna add 4 more inches for the overlap to the smaller side. that means i'm working with both finishing at 10 inches, make'n it easy on my brain so far (thats not always easy).

my muslin is cut now for the width at 19inch by wof (that is 46inch) so i'll have 2 pieces cut 10 x 23 inches. enough extra for seams, hems and the amount take'n up by the quilting. i'll double that back over itself on the final layer of quilting (2 layers with trapunto). i think i'm working this out just that typing it in here so someone else can understand helps me be sure too. well thats my thots anyhow, lol.

so now i'm look'n at the design and i dont really like the two leaves with the flower. maybe a bud? but what is that flower and what bud works? hmmmmm. i've googled flower buds but none so far fit the pix in my head. not a fully closed bud as that is a bit too plain. tho maybe two buds where i show the leaves, one closed, one partially open? hmmmmm. so much thinking for what should be such a simple project. hell the front block is done and quilted and ready to back for the cushion cover. pollyl suggested a couple of buttons to finish it off. i'd thot of both buttons and ties, i'll see when i get the rest done. why do i do this to myself...(rhetorical). time to move to another posi, hip/leg act'n up again, cheers, j.

a CD cover, why? i've got a finished block the right size for front of 16inch cushion. i want to machine trapunto on plain muslin on the back overlapped pieces. i'm just trying to work out the size to cut in the first place and the order to finish the thing. dont give me anymore to think about, i'm losing it already. j.

as of now, i've got one piece of muslin cut at 19 inches by 46 inches (wof). uh oh, i cant recall if this is washed? it is from a long long long piece bought yrs back now. oh geez, louise. i'll have to wash it then to check, else i'm in the poo big time. i now need a nap. j.

"Roberta" wrote... IMO this all makes perfect sense and ought to work! Especially if you give it that extra underlap. Cut your pieces just a bit bigger than you think you need, and trim down after doing the trapunto. Remember that the cushion inside will tend to push the back sections apart. You might consider adding a couple of pretty buttons. Roberta in D
