Mariner's Compass (photo link)

He must be a very tall man - I could see feet quite plainly at the bottom of the quilt and his head seemed very near the ceiling! Very useful for quilt holding!

Have given up using my DH for quilt holding - he expects the process to take approx. 10 seconds and then gets bored!

OOh gorgeous! I'd SITD around all the blue compass points and then echo inside about 3/8" apart (or whatever looks right). Then do a fleur-de-lis in metallic thread at the north point plus "NE", "E", "SE", etc. around the rest of the points in big letters. Find something curvy to fit in the triangles inside the outer ring of points, plus something similar to fill in the corners of the background. Maybe stipple the rest of the background, it's up to you. Or do the whole background in MacTavish feathers! Roberta in D

Thanks, I printed the info. I don't think I'll get around to it this summer, but will definitely have one made by next boating season. I hope! LOL

Carole,

In The QUilter Magazine (July 2006 - has butterflies on the cover) there is a pattern called El DOrado. It is a mariner's compass done in yellows, reds, and oranges - I've already modified the colors so that I can start on the wallhanging for our dining area. If you can't find it, let me know and I can try to get the pics/instructions/templates out to you.

Thanks Larisa, I have that issue. It was part of a thunkie sent to me by this wonderful person. Hum... it must have been the meds I was on in the hospital because I didn't recall that pattern. Actually, come to think of it, I don't recall much. LOL I just checked the issue and there it is. Thanks for the reminder/info.

Ooh! I love the quilt called Gelato on that page. The main part of that quilt could be easily strip-pieced, too. Mmmmm, I need to make a bed-sized quilt for my godson before his birthday, that would be perfect with a more boy-type border.

not a problem....as I said, this is the pattern I'm using for the wallhanging that will go in our dining area. I have been terrified of making a Mariner's Compass, but I think, with it being relatively decent in size (not too big, not too small) I can handle this one.
