'm sooo pleased with my first effort at a portrait quilt. It's at mywebshots album in the quilts in 2008 folder. I'm going to enter it inthe Quilt Show in Bloomington IN the last weekend in Feb/1st day ofMarch.

very well done! How did you create your template... please share with us your process. I'm sure it took many hours of prep... before the many hours of piecing... and quilting!

Good luck in the show!

=2E..=A0How did you create your template... please share with us

I used the book by Julia C Wood called Fabric Photo Play. It involved applying filters in Adobe Photoshop elements to accentuate the shadows and facial shading and then putting some tracing paper over the printed out pic and making a pattern that outlines the values rather than the details. Then I enlarged the tracing on a large piece of paper taped on my wall with a projector and redrew it on the wall at the enlarged size. You then have to decide on at least 3 values, dark, med, and light, eventually a total of 5 values and number them on the paper. Trace the paper template onto clear vinyl minus the numbers. Pick the fabric, I used 5 browns plus a different brown for the background. I taped the vinyl to the background fabric and used it to place all my pieces, just like a jig saw puzzle, using steam a seam 2.

I don't even dare hope for a blue ribbon so I won't think about that. And yes, I enjoyed this process so much I will be doing more portraits, beginning with helping grammykathy with a large portrait she wants to do. My personal next is going to be JJ, my beautiful Boxer dog.
