Thank you Estelle. Our little house group of seven are in Caithness with one member living just over the 'border' in Sutherland, hence the name Kross Kounty Quilters. (thought we'd better stick to Q for the last part ;)) We were 9 but alas two of our members moved away down to England. We meet about 2 days a month in one of our homes. Dates for further meetings are arranged to suit the majority. We range in age from mid 40s to mid 70's. It's a wonderful little group. Last night we went out for a meal to celebrate the end of the exhibition. Alas as life would have it only 4 of us could make it so we are planning another social outing.:) The exhibition was held in the Swanson Gallery in Thurso. The gallery were very impressed by the number of people who came to see the exhibit. Which was three times the visits to the gallery for previous exhibitions, so have asked us back another year. (They said next year but that's far to soon for us to have stuff ready). This is great since we didn't have to pay for the use of the gallery to display our quilts. Previous years it's cost us a small packet so we used to have to charge entrance. This time we only were selling 'raffle tickets' (by way of a diary date) for the couple of quilts we are raffling for the RNLI. We always like to do one for a local charity.

Where abouts are you Estelle? Elly

Well Elly, I am totally at the other end of this Island of ours!! In Cornwall in fact! Only just though, on the border with Devon. I guess you are near the border too! I don't know Scotland at all but it is on my list of places to go! We have about 40 members in our group. I wish we had a "free" place for our bi annual exhibition. It does eat into the money we raise. This next exhibition is May next year and our charity is MS in Cornwall this time. I am in fact hand quilting the raffle quilt ,which is huge. Hoping tomorrow a few others will come around to help. I must say you have a lot of talent in your group. I have just had another browse. Do you ever have demonstrators, or just come up with ideas between yourselves?

You must all have worked incredibly hard to put such a wonderful exhibition together. Congratulations.

You are lucky having a house group to join. I always think that meetings in houses work so well, and cheap too. My nearest is about 10 miles away and meets in the evenings, and I don't do night driving down country lanes if I can help it, so this is my group!

I am lucky enough to have one quilt shop about 15 miles away and another about 25 miles away, so I'm lucky in that way. When we lived in Nottingham there was nothing except John Lewis.

Enjoy your next meal out - if there is always someone missing, think how many outings there will be an excuse for!

Thanks for those, Elly! :) I've just had a lovely time in front of a slideshow of your pictures. There were many that I'd have loved to have been able to see "up close and personal".

Hi Estelle, (this is long so get a cuppa) My son was working as a chef down in Devon in the summer, in a place called Dittisham, the Red Lion it is.

We're on the border of the North sea! 20 miles from John O'Groats the other end of the island to you.

The KKQs used to belong to a larger group who are called the Caithness Quilters. In fact we were the founder members of that group and the very first committee. Which is how we first became formed. We found we were running around like headless chickens at meetings, helping all the beginners, etc. and never got any sewing or socializing done ourselves so we decided we would have days for ourselves in each others houses. Only one our members remains with the bigger group too. I became to feel really uncomfortable and unwelcome,as did the other members of the KKQs so we stopped going. The reasons for breaking away are more complex than I can explain on here as it's a very long story. We all felt a sadness as it was our 'baby' but such is life. Now we are a group with no committee and do things on a majority. No expense, no need for treasurers - a job nobody wanted... no hassle.

Congratulations on hand quilting your charity quilt. I hope you get some helpers. Such a big job and huge responsibility. I hope you'll take pictures of your exhibition, I'd love to see them. We were lucky to get the council funded gallery to hold ours this year. The last one in a local hall cost a pretty penny and we had to charge an entrance to cover it. That was in 2005 - our charity quilt for that year was for local Alzheimer's and Autism groups.

We come up with the ideas ourselves, generally > Well Elly, I am totally at the other end of this Island of ours!! In

Oh, Elly! these are gorgeous! i love the red and white feathered star, and the pumpkins! what talent you all have! i, too, had to quit a guild, like many of them, a few members became tiresome and petty. i have no use for a group of women who can't be civil to everyone. it was to the point that i didnt even want to get in the car to go to a meeting. so, now i have you people and a few close "house" quilter friends, much more rewarding and enjoyable. besides, as soon as i learn to upload my pictures, i can join in on the bragging!!! LOL! our LQS has a show every two years. i usually put a couple quilits in the show, thank goodness they're not juried! that would be too much pressure for me! but i volunteer as a white glove and get to meet so many quilters, it is fun and a great event. amy
