For most of the 18th C stays were required... However, the mid-century Robe Battante is a loose gown that can be worn without stays if you must.

In the 18th C even the poorest women wore stays. Towards the end of the century it was possible to get away without stays if one was slim when wearing the Chemise a la Reine gown made popular by Marie Antoinette
