OT: Dogs (and, well, cats too)

I was just thinking that dogs, and, well, cats too would lose most of their appeal if they could talk. At least for me they would.

But our cat does talk. Maybe not people words but she definitely talks. :)

Oh man! Not me! I'd LOVE to hear what these four goofy 'kids' of mine would come up with if they could talk to me. Hoover is very vocal and is always making strange noises- some sound like a complete sentence. I *know* without a doubt he's trying to talk to me. I wish I could understand him rather than trying to guess. But he's always happy if he gets a treat for his vocalizing efforts, so it's not in vain on his part.

Goodness, I totally disagree :)

I have four parrots and they all talk. There's nothing like coming downstaris in the morning and hearing "Good morning, darlin!" not to mention all the other goofy things they say and do.

I'd love it if my dog could talk then at least I would know what she's been trying to tell me all these years...with the birds, it's easy!

When I was in High school (I think it was that far back), when I would perhaps feel a bit down or upset, Chelsea, our dog at that time, who has long since passed, would just know I was feeling out of sorts and would just come over to me and let me talk to her and pet her. It made me feel much better than any amount of talking ever could have.

If she could talk, she would have lost that ability, perhaps one of my fondest memories of her.

I have no idea what you are talking about. The only group I have posted to, at least in this thread, is RCTQ, and I don't think I have ever posted to an animal group.

Goodness that is easy! Even I, the cat person know what the pup has been saying all this time.

" My dear lady that hash you give me as a treat now and again is all fine and well, but let us try some with a bit more meat to it and fewer corn flakes if you please. By the way those birds are _annoying_."

IMO it would be great if they could talk, as long as they didn't *talk back* too much. They do vocalize, they are definitely trying! And Murphy the African Grey parrot we used to babysit absolutely knew what he was talking about. His person was my friend Suzanne, but Murphy hated her husband and used his voice to speak. We'd hear him making a huge racket, whistling, singing, screeching for a good 5 minutes. Then would come the agonized voice of the husband: "Murphy, shut up!" then a slight pause, and Murphy would add "Ha, ha, ha!" Roberta in D

LOL! I'm sure that's it, Nightmist! That dog does seem to get jealous of the birds at times!

My current dog *does* talk, she just has a limited vocabulary.

When we come home, she says "H'yah" or "H'ro". When she wants out she says "ow".

When she wants to get my attention, she says "mmmm" (mom). DS is "errrr" (his name ends in the "er" sound). DD is "N'yah" because her name ends in "nia". We're trying to teach her DD's boyfriend's name, Zach. I'm sure she'd call him "Akkkk" which would be really funny because she'd be making a gagging/hacking sound for him. :-) (BTW, he's a great young man, we really like him, and he might end up being my DSIL in another year or so, so teaching the dog to call him "akkk" is all in fun. :-)

Fabulous! One of my cats has really different sounds for what she wants - and I can recognise them! - but they don't bear any relation to the actual human words. . In message , Dragonfly writes

Ray (Sew Slow) on WeFixIt says his cats have words for some things. I think

6 am breakfast is something like "boo-rips". They have a different "word" for dinner.

I've never had cats, just dogs, but this is the first one I've had that has learned our names. My last dog, the "practically perfect" one, did develop a special bark for rabbits that sounded like a very excited "ribbit!" -- and she had a special bark for Grandma, too, because she really liked grandma. :-) She recognized a lot of phrases, too. But she didn't make any other sounds that sounded like words.

When we were building the house and getting ready to move in, I used a lot of her "house" words to try to communicate this would be our new home ("go to bed", "go upstairs", "____'s room", "inside", "stay home", etc.) and suddenly the light went on in her eyes and she UNDERSTOOD! It was so cool seeing how excited she suddenly got, dancing and leaping all over the living room.

I miss her sometimes, she was a really cool dog.
