OT IE7

It depends with what you call 'problems'. The bigest 'problem' for me is recent MS updates have prevented it loading 'Adobe Flash'. This due to a rights issue with a company called Eolas. Firefox is not affected for some reason, perhaps they don't use the same algorithms. Incidentally this 'problem' with 'Flash' affects all varieties of IE, not solely IE7.

If you want more information simply 'Google' for 'IE7 and Flash problems'.

I suggest you switch to 'Firefox' that functions asa well if not better than IE7, at least is not plagued with the 'Flash' problem and the somewhat bizarre new interface adopted by Microsoft for IE7.

I'm piggybacking here since the original post is in here. sorry Hazel. ;-) I know this is a bit late too. Sorry.

DH and I have our two desktop computers networked. He has IE7 on his and is pretty ok with it. I have my updates set to automatic. Well, IE7 is the only update I've been getting lately and when it installed, it screwed up a lot of stuff. I had to uninstall it and go back to IE6. It really upset me to because it wiped out my address book, newsgroups, all the mail in my mail box and some other things. One reason I haven't been posting in here for awhile.

Awhile back I downloaded the updates to my laptop which included IE7. BIG - HUGE mistake. Screwed up stuff on my laptop too. Now I can't access hotmail, anything that uses LiveID or .NET or the microsoft stuff, newsgroups and mail are screwed up. So I will NOT EVER use IE7 again. DH is going to have to dump the hard drive on my laptop and restore it so I can access stuff again.

I'm seriously considering giving Firefox a try.

My DH is a big fan of Firefox, Mika. He would like me to 'convert' too; but, for the moment anyway, I am OK with IE. . In message , Mika writes

Hummmmm. I got an IOU for a new laptop for Christmas. With the new OS (Vista) coming out early next year, I think I'll wait until it's out for a bit (for patches and bugs to be worked out) before cashing in my IOU. Perhaps I'll just leave IE6 on my desktop since I've not had any reason to update. It sounds like it's working well for most people, but it's the occasional one like you who has me wary. I know there are many dedicated Mac users, but I want a laptop for my Bernina software and my EQ6....both PC programs primarily. Moving to a Mac with the Windows program will be more than my IOU is covering! :-) Hope everyone had a great holiday. We did, but I'm exhausted today!!! KJ

I've used Firefox for several months and really like it. Now, the only time I use IE is if I'm trying to download an update from Microsoft that won't work with Firefox.

Although I did just find an article in a computer magazine that says Firefox isn't any safer than IE security-wise. It says that the creeps have found ways to get to IE through Firefox. It gives a link that I'm going to check -

to see if I'm ok.

You shouldn't be having problems downloadingMicrosoft updates using the recent versions of Firefox. I have no problems. Earlier versions of Firefox required an 'add-on' to make them IE compatible. I suggest you update Firefox to version 2 and retry a MS site, it should work OK.

I use Mozilla, which is Firefox. Before that I used Netscape, also same basic company (or something.) I like it. Nice and easy to use, very user friendly. Granted there are a few places that there are minor problems, but most sites are either already usable or want to know if there is a problem using a major program to access them. ( the syntax of that sentence is lousy.....)

Not sure what IE has that Mozilla/Firefox doesn't have. You might want to give it a try sometime.

Can anyone running IE7 tell me how to change the icons on toolbars?

I have a pop-up toolbar set up with links to everything I use. They used to have unique icons so I could see them more easily. Now I have a mass of the standard Explorer icons.

I have gone in through Properties and assigned the icons I want and everything seems to have worked, no reject/error messages - but the icons don't change! When I go back to Properties the "default" icon has reset.

Interesting!

I just had 6983 unread posts to rctq dumped into OE!! Including a few of my own that I never saw posted when I sent them. This does not bode well for the new year.

Well I guess you could call this an improvement. This morning I only got 6737 unread posts dumped into OE!! If this keeps up I will have to give up ng's altogether.

Cheryl, Why not give free agent a try and see how that works for you with the newsgroups. It a wonderful program and like it says it is free.

Not familiar with "free agent". What is it?

And don't forget where I live. I have created problems in the past by loading US versions of software that did not like other Aussie versions I had running (Yahoo springs to mind!)

There is an option to download "all new" headers or "all" headers and yours seems to be stuck on "all". Basically, Windows has decided to reset your OE options and you need to set them properly again manually. After it happened to me twice I bought and installed the news reader called Agent. I haven't had a problem in years. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Agent is the paid for version of Free Agent, I can't find where Free Agent is now, but I also use Agent and noticed there are links to sites other than in the US to download from so it must work in other countries too.

No idea what the link was to but it shut down IE with an error message.

If you are suggesting that I switch to Mac - while it is not impossible in OZ, it puts you in the miniscule minority, and way out where I live there is no support at all. Personally, I would love to change (don't care if it's to a Mac as long as it's away from this box!) but my rapidly decreasing ability to maintain things myself means that I cannot afford to break out of the mainstream and face possible problems getting help in future.

To be fair, what I have ATM is a problem service provider. The "box" is runing well (touch wood!!).

I very rarely have a problem with my Mac and when I do it's usually in VPC/Windows (iBook) or Parallels/Windows (iMac)
