Thanks for asking Marilyn. The fires probably will go on for awhile. The big areas just take a long time to get completely out.

The fires in the area north of LA are doing really well. The fires in the mountains near us are still pretty big but I think the danger to homes is less. One of those 2 fires is only 15% contained. Hopefully they will get that one taken care of soon. In Orange county they were still calling new evacuations this afternoon. Many folks are getting back to their homes though. San Diego county took a lot of damage. They still have active burns. They were still having new evacuations earlier today but hopefully that is coming to an end. I think things will be much better tomorrow. This page has a good recap/update:

I think I heard that over 700 square miles have burned in total. We are talking a lot of fire and over 1750 homes.

I heard someone in San Diego saying they are worried about tourism. If you need to plan a nice vacation that would be a good choice. Rosie's should be fine. Taria

Hi Marilyn,

Fires are still burning, but have calmed down considerable since the winds have stopped. Today was much cooler which helped, at least for the Santigo fire. Unfortunately, they now that Santigo Canyon fire was definitely arson, possibly set by a firefighter who has a "hero" or "first responder" complex.

San Diego has opened up quite a few of the mandatory evacuation areas, they closed the shelter at the stadium this morning as there were only about 70 people there.

The air became clearer this afternoon, I actually have windows opened. Unfortunately, heat is suppose to return this weekend. No word on the Santa Anas that I have heard. If things continue as they are, school should re-open on Monday.

I have been designated a collection center for Kappa Delta's Kids Need to be Kids Program

so I will be receiving toys and books soon. Rebuilding will be the next step for those who lost their homes. Debbi in SO CA

Weather is much cooler today and yesterday. To the tune of about 40 degrees cooler. We have a lot of fog right now, and it is mixed with micro-fine ash. While the thermometer says it is great for walking, the air quality does not. The smoke blew 300-400 miles out to see. The winds have changed direction and are now mixing the smoke in with fog and bringing it back on-shore. I expect this will go on for a while.

Fire danger around here has gone down dramatically, but there were a few spot fires late yesterday. The devastation is unbelievable. Fire know no discrimination when it burns. Multi-million dollar house along with everyman's house were all prone to burning down. The stories that come out now are of neighborhoods that lost all but one or two houses, neighborhoods where only one or two houses burned. There is no rhyme or reason.

In the areas where they have suspected or confirmed arson, the sense of "what kind of a person does this???" is heartbreaking.

i hope they catch the bastards and fry their butts big time. they should be charged with arson and murder for the deaths (i dont mean manslaughter either) caused from the fires. makes me wanna spew at the thot of any human being who does this deliberately knowing full well the damage and choas to humans, homes, pets, livestock and the landscape that will result. grrrrrrrrrrrr, jeanne

I've found one of the best ways to get news from an area far away that my local news channels don't cover and the national media has moved on form is to search for one of that area's local newspapers or tv station's web site. You can't beat local coverage. For southern California I'd search for Los Angeles or San Diego news stations and papers.

You can get "local" coverage from huge parts of the world this way.
