OT: survived storm Klaus!!

Well, haven't been online for a week. We were hit by storm Klaus, so knocked out our power from last Saturday 8am until Tuesday 8pm! No TV, computer, oven, lighting.......etc. We lived with candles and a paraffin lamp.

We had 147 km/h winds here and lost a dozen tiles of the roof, a window blew out and about 5 trees went over. 3 were already dead, so will be going in the woodburner, the others are cypress and are at a 45degree angle, so waiting for the landlord to make safe and fix the rest of the house. We have traditional french shutters, so sat out the day with them shut until evening, not knowing what was going on outside, to our cars or campervan, which luckily were all OK, we got off quite lightly.

It was a bit of a weekend, because DD#2, started with a gastro bug in the night, so at 2am I'm changing beds, mopping bathrooms etc. All quiet outside then, beautiful starlight. Was hoping at this stage that forecast was wrong. By 7am, after attending to sick child in night, the wind started and peaked at about noon, and by 6 pm had stopped. Then it was so still and quiet for about 1/2hour, then the chainsaws started!!!! Plenty of trees down, roads blocked, no water in areas because of no pumps working. DD#1 wrote a journal, in case she forgets, I won't!!!!

Anyway, haven't done any sewing, everything takes far longer with no electricity, so no time or too dark. I was working frantically around daylight hours to get things done. Luckily my parents live 5 mins down the road, no damage with them, but had electric back on by Sunday night, so was able to borrow their washing machine.

So I'm back, did I miss much? My French improved, because we only had local radio to listen to, otherwise we wouldn't have had a clue what was going on.

Love and hugs to all, great to be back online and in touch with the outside world again.

Good gracious, Janner. We have survived many storms but never one where the radio only spoke French. I'm thinking that radio would go flying out the window that had blown out. What a time you've had! Polly

Glad to hear you survived reasonably OK. We did hear about the storm - but only after the event. It must have been awful; and terribly rare? That's a very long time without power. How fortunate that you had the shutters. I've always thought they were a great idea.

Hope DD2 is OK now. Rotten luck for both of you that timing. . In message , Janner writes

So what part of France do you live in? For some reason I had thought you lived in the north, but Klaus was in the south.

I used to live in Gironde (1980-81), in Ste. Croix-du-mont. I haven't had any word yet on damages there, but the photos from closer to the coast looked pretty bad.

We're in South West France, near Toulouse. This is our 3rd year here already!
