Ping! Jan aka CoffeeDiva

Jan, did you go to the MQS at the OP convention center? A friend and I drove up yesterday and spent 6 hours! I'm exhausted! And overwhelmed.

We are thinking about buying a long arm together. We are both FM challenged.

The quilts were absolutely stunning.

Oh yes I did!! Many of my friends won ribbons so we happy danced all over the place!! I loved every minute. Took over 500 pictures.... spent waaaay too much money and had an awesome time!! Glad you made it up. Which one did you like best?? I love seeing the Janet Fogg quilts up close, but then Renae and Ronda are so phenomenal as well... whiplash I tell ya... and then to see that Sharon Schamber's quilt up close... I think I could have pitched a tent over there. :-)

I forgot my camera!!!!! Was the Best in Show at the very front Sharon Schamber's quilt? We could barely peel ourselves away from it! A volunteer laughed at us and said if that was the first quilt we had seen we were going to have to pace ourselves.

Like I said, we were there for 6 hours and we didn't sit down once. We didn't even stop for a drink. I thought every single quilt was magnificent, but there was a black and tan quilt that just took my breath away. I didn't vote, but I think I would have voted for that one.

I think I'm part magpie, I love the sparkly ones.

Do you think they will post any pictures on the website?

I bought way too much stuff at Liberty Homestead and The Village Mercantile.

I want to go back. Is that held every year?

There was one quilt we were ooooing and awwwing over and we suddenly realized it was the BACK of a quilt we had just ooooed and awwwwed over the front of.

Hey that's when you're good. When the back is as gorgeous as the front.

ROTFL... sounds like you did enjoy yourself. You can buy a cd that has all the pics of the show complete with information on who quilted it etc. If you want the info, email me and I'll dig out my reciept and give you the website. I bought one last year and was really happy with it. But overall, posting pics is becoming one of those touchy areas. I know most are posted on the individual quilter's website and that's what I use to show people if they are curious.

Yes, the best of show was Sharon Schamber's quilt that won at Paducah. I am a bit confused, but she must have decided to keep the quilt this year instead of the money. I'm willing to bet the one you liked the back of as much as the front was Sharon's or Renae's. Both are great! And both were present there with booths and classes. I'm betting the black and tan quilt that you are thinking of Ronda Byer's quilt that took an award. She's great too! It is called Star's For Arden. The show is just fun It's kind of like wandering around the who's who of machine quilting. And all the lastest toys are there as well as top vendors. It's just a good time. I threatened to get a hotel room over there so I could spend more time, but in the long run, I wanted to spend the money on the toys and the time with my family.

The show will be there again next year in May. Info can be found at

Class registration usually opens up in January and the classes usually fill up really fast.

Glad you had a good time!

Cindy, if you go to

and then click on Chat at the top, it'll take you to a message board with pictures of some of the quits. Is the black and tan one the one that had circle-shaped holes in it? It was gorgeous!

I'm hoping that I can join the fun next year. But this year, I'm living vicariously through all of you!

Thank you, Louise, that one is just beautiful, but it's not the one I'm thinking of. I'm glad to see the Viewers Choice. It was all glittery, which doesn't show up well in the pics.

I KNEW I saw that quilt before (BIS). It was the pics from Paducah. And since her quilt kind of hung by itself, the back was obvious. So I'm going to guess it was the other quilt you mentioned that we didn't realize it was the back. The back was just black with that incredible quilting. The front was very colorful.

If the CD can be ordered from the MQS site, I can find it. Thanks for the info.

go to awards gallery. She took two ribbons at MQS this year and Sugar and Spice also won at Houston. The Black side is actually the front. She has made several

2 sided quilts. Radiance of the Son was hanging in her booth as well. Ronda's webshots has Stars For Arden here

Pay Jan to quilt your tops and save your friendship and have more money for fabric. Just an idea. The money, training time and equipment involved has to be a big deal. One gal that sold me a machine years ago said she would rather share her husband than her sewing machine. Some things aren't so fun to share ; )

Oh that may have been it! The black side is the front? Wow. It was so beautiful.

Yes, that is definitely the one that we obviously couldn't tell the front from the back. That is so impressive.

You know, I've thought about whether it would be touchy or not. I can afford a machine, but I don't have the room to put one up. I am just so tired of making these quilt tops and not being able to finish them. I've tried and tried free motion and it's just not for me right now.

10 years ago, I wasn't able to piece blocks and be satisfied and I put quilting aside and just come back to it in the last 4 -5 years. And it is totally different for me.

You have to be in the right, I don't know, mind set I guess, to be able to master some skills. At least for me. The wonderful woman who is trying to teach me free motion keeps saying loosen your shoulders! That's as loose as they get!

I'll start right off by saying I've never used a big machine. BUT.... I would think the skills are fairly similar to FM? You move the machine instead of the sandwich, but getting the right patterns to flatter the quilt top and getting your stitches the right size and arguing with the thread, needle and tension combinations seems to be universal. You also have the fact that you are standing or on a rolling stool for long periods. Have you test driven one for any length of time?

Leslie & Teleflora,

Have either of you thought about just renting time on a machine and seeing how you like it? I know Merrily We Quilt Along in Springfield MO offers it and Leslie, you could always just call Gammill and ask if they do right there in your backyard ;-) But it's kind of a good in between, you still get to do your own top without worrying about the space etc and then you can decide if it's for you before laying out the money.

Taria's right, it's not just the machine. That is really just the starting point. And if you can't get the toys to go with it, or have the time to develop your skills to a level that makes you smile, then I would guess that could get frustrating. I've been blessed with a lot and I am thankful for that ;-) But I have worked incredibly hard at the piecing side for over 14 years and now I put in countless MANY hours learning the freehand and other various tricks and skills for the longarm. It doesn't just drop in your lap with the purchase of the machine, you have to spend the time learning.

I've tried out a few at shows -it would be soooo great to own one! I have room but the budget doesn't stretch that far. It didn't really feel like free motion on a little machine, which usually involves a bit of alligator wrestling to get everything through. The longarms are just so easy to move!
