Blankies for Grown-Ups is a program that one of our members (Susan) put together after a former member passed away from breast cancer. The surviving spouse brought over all his wife's fabrics & asked that Susan find a good use for it. She did a "garage sale" to the members & with the money made a donation to Breast Cancer. Then, since she still had a lot of the fabrics left, she started making lap quilts & donating them to the Wellness Community, which has several programs for cancer patients - I think it is primarily breast cancer, but I can't swear to it. Then other members wanted to get involved, so the "Blankies for Grown-Ups" program developed. Last year, we ended up with a lot of juvenile fabrics, so we made a lot of children's quilts & donated them to Red Cross for small catastrophe's locally, such as fires, etc. Then we kept getting more kids quilts, so we have a relationship with the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, which is a temporary shelter for families in crisis & we give them about 90 quilts every quarter. Susan, the lady who runs the program, sets up a booth at our quilt show & at a few other local craft shows & sells sewing related items & hand made items , donated by guild members & raises money to purchase batting, etc. & with extra funds, she continues to make a donation to Breast Cancer. She's an amazing woman. I think she has been doing this for about 6 years - she was working full time until a year ago & her house has pretty much been overtaken by the program. She had to move herself out of the master bedroom into a smaller bedroom, so she could accommodate work party days & supplies!
