LOL--- there is actually a gadget called "Sally's Gizmo" from Sally Schneider (sp??). It is a ruler type of thing, designed to mark rectangles to make half square triangle units. Neat little gadget that really works. Got one in Houston when I attended a lecture by Sally.
Pati, > >> Janice, are you aware that there is a Big quilt show (for us) coming up in
I totally need background noise. I can and sometimes do work in quiet, but I actually do better work if I have something that will pull me out and distract me for a moment every now and again. Otherwise I tend to start matching the work to itself and that only works out in the very short run. (G)
One peculiar thing I have noticed, is that when I am working without music or a movie or something running, people seem more willing to interupt me for foolish things. Then I eat their heads and it is bad.
NightMist well known for saying things like: "I know your mama taught you how to boil water 'cause I'm her, and for that very same reason I know darn well you were not born without legs."
Hmmm, I love Bible study, so I usually download speakers on topics I'm curious about, (
Oh for me it's music. Always and forever music, music, music. My computer speakers are the best speakers in the house, and I sew right in here. : )

NPR and audio books with TV a very distant third place.
Nann who did a lot of listening/quilting this fall as a judge for the Audie Awards -- 27 unabridged nonfiction audiobooks in 3 months!
the Radio classics channel. Jack benny, Burns and Allan, The Shadow but my DGD of 4yrs going on 15 likes to sew with me so now we listen to the Disney channel while we sew. Her machine is beside me and she is now quite independant when she works. She just goes into her own scrap box that grammy made and picks out things that strike her fancy and sews them together. She hasn't made anythig recognizable yet but I figure her crativity is more important at this point.

Why is it that dogs seem to love laying right against my chair, or at least between my sewing chair and cutting table and just look at me as I have to step over them (wouldn't want to move would they )LOL. They do made for nice company!

Wonder which of us would be the first one to be sent to the principal's office? I suspect it would be our Pat on Her Hill. It's the quiet ones you really have to watch. Polly

It depends on if it is a tried and true pattern or one that is completely new to me; if it is piecing or applique; and where I am in the process.
Take, for example, the blue/orange/white quilt that You (Karen) have seen..that was several (gazillions?/) of smallish pieces. That one, I had music on low, enough that i knew it was there and I could focus on that when I got frustrated. On most, when they are still in the cutting stage, I have music up at refular volume, however, applique tends to be full out blasting so the children won't hear their MOmmy using bad words .
When I am pinning binding on, I'm usually in front of the television, watching whatever happens to be on at that time.
Now, what I currently have in hte room are all 3 Casting Crowns cds that we own, plus a few of my country cds. MOstly I listen to the Casting Crowns because they seem to keep me focused and positive....I've even had them on when editing papers about computer programs (something I really don't know that much about)....keeps me focused and, even though I don't understand the jargon/lingo, I can take the fragmented sentences and tu rn them into a smoothly flowing paper :-)
Ok, got off topic, but...that's typical for me, right?

oh no...I don't think it would be Pat. Though she might deserve to be sent to the principal's office.....I doubt she would ever get CAUGHT! Her manners and decorum would keep everyone off guard. I think it might be Leslie....her exuberence would tip off the ones in charge. They would be keeping a close eye on her! I, on the other hand, would never do anything that would warrant a trip to the office.
I think mostly i have to agree with Patti. And the type of music only depends when i am quilting lol I seem to quilt better with a faster beat.
Piecing almost always needs music and it can be slow, fast, old, new or whatever.
When I am basting I need people and sometimes music.
TV distracts. Cant stand to be "read to" so books on CD don't work well for me.
No kiddos works best for all of the above except basting when I call in the older 2 and/or DH. DD2 still isn't quite reliable enough with safety pins and directions lol

Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman....great movie. The Eng/pt is a bit draggy but the

If I'm doing the cutting or piecing, I usually have the TV on (talk show/game show/ or news channel so that I can take a break now and then to walk around and stretch. When I'm basting, I'd rather be the only one in the house..... (I safety-pin baste and occasionally "stab" myself with the point of the pin -- then the air turns BLUE! - and sometimes, if I'm not extra careful, the quilt top will get RED spots on it . That's when I know it's time for a coffee'n'chocolate break.) When I'm quilting, especially free motion, I put a favorite CD in the player and crank it up.
It's based on Jane Austen's book. One of my favorite movies :)
Here is a brief synopsis from imdb.com
When Mr. Dashwood dies, he must leave the bulk of his estate to the son by his first marriage, which leaves his second wife and three daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) in straitened circumstances. They are taken in by a kindly cousin, but their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. When Elinor forms an attachment for the wealthy Edward Ferrars, his family disapproves and separates them. And though Mrs. Jennings tries to match the worthy (and rich) Colonel Brandon to her, Marianne finds the dashing and fiery Willoughby more to her taste. Both relationships are sorely tried. But this is a romance, and through the hardships and heartbreak, true love and a happy ending will find their way for both the sister who is all sense and the one who is all sensibility.
