quilting environment discussion

I almost always like to have something going on, but I really prefer to be alone in the house so as not to have interruptions. I like a movie best, but one I've already seen is really good, since then I don't have to look as often. Other than that, sometimes music, more often a good podcast, occasionally an audiobook.

There must be some form of noise in the house other than myself. Usually the TV is on something, usually a comedy. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Piggybacking here. I like music. I'll usually have a favorite cd playing, public radio or my iPod going. I love music, all kinds.

When I'm involved in a project everything else seems to 'go away' so it doesn't really matter what is going on :)

It's music for me, anything else is just a distraction. Radio or CD works for me, I seem to get more work done when there's music on than anything else.

Howdy!

Yes.

Sometimes it's quiet, more often there's something to listen to, stories, movies, tv, cds, dvds, friends, husband.

Handquilting, I go thru' lots of audio books. Our library is offering several options for these including downloads via their website. They're also stocking tv series and classic as well as current movies. But I usually go for the audio books. For Christmas, younger son gave me a cable to play the iPod via the Bose, along w/ Harry Potter movie #5 and the latest Eagles; this after he reminded me that I have access to any of his cds, including Metallica, that I don't already have. ;-)

And since you brought up the question, Karen, what about you?

Speakin' of audiobooks, has anyone listened to "Stash Envy" or any of the other one(s) by Lisa Boyer???

I keep meanin' to get that at my local bookstore (or LQS, I think), but just haven't gotten around to it. Also, not sure how good an author she is!

Hugs!!

I used to listen to oldies rock with the volume pretty loud and sing along as I sewed- usually bouncing up and down and/or swaying side to side on my chair- a very weird way of dancing as I sew. But when I'm designing or cutting I have to concentrate and don't like any distractions. I got out of the sewing to music habit when I was sewing in the garage conversion cuz it messed with someone else's television viewing. I'll have to get back into the habit. I also require several dogs to stumble over, run my chair wheels over and have nudge my arm at just the wrong moment. It makes for more of a challenge matching intersections and points! ;-)

I'm a social quilter. I love having a quilting buddy quilting along with me. When that's not possible, I have the tv or some music on. On a similar vein, when I paint, I have to have absolutely no pressure. I need the house clean, the laundry done and good food ready. When I quilt, apparently I don't care if the Health Dept. condemns the place and everybody starves. You Know where I spent my mental health $s. Just no explaining me. Polly

I prefer silence... or more accurately, the sounds of nature (windows open/obviously not NOW!!!)

Sorry to piggyback here, but if you know about the Pensacola show, you might know of the Gulf Coast Quilt Expo here in Panama City Beach ...

Well, it's been canceled. :(

The hotel/resort that's hosted it for the past few years got a "better offer" and broke the contract. :(

Can you guys believe that??!! Really, really, really stinks. :(

I guess I'm in the minority--I dislike noise, and love peace and quiet. I may have TV on if there's something I want to watch, but otherwise it's off. Will rarely play a CD. Gen

Wish I lived close enough to be your buddy!

I think that wish is pretty universal on this group. Imagine having Polly in person with those one liners that make you spit on your monitor and fall off your chair. Can't imagine much quilting would be accomplished! And the sore tummy from laughing non-stop.....

No!! Tell me more please. We've finally gotten help (respite care for Mother) so I might actually be able to go. I'd like that... would be a blast to look around, and who knows? Might find a gizmo I needed too.
