Sharon Schamber

Hi, I'm hoping you wonderful ladies & gentlemen can help me. I receive the newsletter Sharon Schamber emails, and in it this week she talks about the halo she developed to keep the quilt taut while quilting. She also has a video on You Tube showing how it's used. It really looks wonderful, but I was wondering if anyone has one and if so, does it really help with FM quilting? I really need all the help I can get. The halo is suppose to help keep the pressure off your arms, shoulders, hands & etc. also helps if you have arthritis (which I do) and carpel tunnel problems (which I have had both wrists operated on). It almost sounds too good to be true. I'm really hoping someone has bought one and will tell me what she/he thinks about it. Thanks, Wanda_GA

Welcome Wanda -have we met you before? IMO anything like what you describe would only get in the way. If you think it sounds too good to be true, you are most often correct! Quilting never bothers my wrists since the motion involves the whole arm, but the weight of a large quilt can be hard on my shoulders. I have a flat-bed cabinet for my machine, lots of table space behind the machine and to the left, and I use cotton gloves with rubber dots all over the palm to get more traction. Music helps too. I just went to see the video - if the Halo would help me quilt as beautifully as Sharon does, I'd buy three of them!

Is it possible that you could order one and give it a try, and if it doesn't work for you as well as it does for her, you could return it? It wouldn't hurt to contact her or her distributor to ask.

Thanks Roberta for your reply to my help question. After sleeping on it I have decided exactly what you've said - if it quacks like a duck, looks like a duck then it IS a duck! I just need to keep on practicing and get over the fear of FM quilting. I envy all you ladies/gentlemen that can do it so effortlessly. I recently did purchase Paula Reids DVD, book and her "quilt sew easy disc's", which I highly recommend. Those discs helps a whole lot to move your quilt around. I have been a long time "lurker" on RCTQ ng, however, when we moved 4 yrs ago we were unable to access the ng until just recently. So was so happy to have it again. I will introduce myself tho, should have done it before now, my apologies. My name is Wanda Moody, my DH and I are retired and moved to Valdosta, GA from Jacksonville, FL about 4 years ago. We left the hurricanes and bought a new house on about 1/3 acre that has 4 huge Pecan trees. My DH is in heaven now as he has more land to take care (he loves being outdoors), and I can concentrate on my quilts! I started quilting almost 8 years ago, but have so much more to learn. Which BTW I want to thank all of the RCTQ ladies/gentlemen for teaching me so much, I don't think you all realize how much you can energize everyone plus keep a person enthused about plugging along even if we make mistakes. We have no QI's, as we lost our two cocker spaniels while living in Jacksonville, we had the mother and one of her puppies. The puppy lived to be 18 years old and developed cancer of her bladder so had to say goodbye and send her to doggie heaven. It was so traumatic that we haven't been able to think about any more pets at this time. I do miss them! I have been trying to make quilts for each of our 3 children, our 4 grandchildren and 1 year ago we were blessed with a Great-grandson which is such a joy to have a baby in the family again. However, he has had me sidetracked for awhile making a quilt for him (yes, he jumped in front of everyone!), also making flannel blankets, burpies (which are burp clothes, just made a little fancier) and last but not least a quilted memory wall hanging for Jackson, which has his birthdate, time, parents names and a picture of his Mom & Dad holding him that I transferred on to the quilt and a lot of embroidered motifs. I also have a Viking embroidery machine that I enjoy which has helped with some of my quilts. My quilting machine is the new Viking Sapphire 870 which has a 9" harp area, which is so nice. I didn't mean to ramble on and on, so will close now. I did want to say Roberta, you mentioned music helps, well you're right, but also Chocolate helps too!!! LOL! Wanda_GA

Thanks for the intro, Wanda! You're right about chocolate, and a glass of red wine to go with it can sometimes loosen those shoulders right up. Practice makes anything easier. I still feel there's lots to learn, and I've been doing this a bit longer than you have. Took me years before I started to be satisfied with my work, now and then! I also envy those who can do it effortlessly, but never actually met any of them ;-) Roberta in D

Louise, I don't know, but it does look easy when watching Sharon doesn't it. However, I've decided I don't think it's for me, too much money to not be happy with it and I doubt if they would let me return it. Someday I will either conquer FM or I'll not be so picky when I do it. I will say Sharon does beautiful work. Thanks, Wanda_GA

There are plenty of free news servers so there is no reason to ever be without Usenet. :-) Your ISP, Bellsouth, has an excellent NS. We used to use them also.

Wanda, I showed the video to my handy husband and he thinks we could get pretty much the same results by using the outside of one of those little $2 plastic embroidery hoops and getting a tacky surface on the bottom of it, like a little bead of silicone caulk. Might be worth a try before plunking down $20-$25 plus shpg. Good Luck!

Yes, I agree with your husband. someone on the HGTV Quilting forum said she had one, and it is real heavy, and like you said sticky on the bottom, she had only tried it once and that was on a tote bag so she really hasn't used it on a big quilt. But I've made up my mind and am going to save my money!! It's really crazy isn't it how people think up all these gadgets & me especially, will fall for them "almost" all the time. This time I'm being more sensible, I hope. LOL!
