Stash Building

I was wondering where you were on this subject, Roberta. I've been trying to spend at least an hour everyday cutting squares from my scrap bin. There's a group over at the Methodist Church making quilts to tie, bless and hug those needing comfort. What they lack in skill (a lot), they make up for in enthusiasm. I'm hoping pre-cut squares will help. The bad news is, it does not seem to diminish the Black Hole. Polly

Nothing ever will, short of (gasp!) upending it into the trash. Good for you, helping out the comfort quilt project. Roberta in D

Actually, I think "stash" has a reproductive gene that keeps growing and growing and growing.... using some of it is like weeding a garden - just when you think you've made a dent in it, more keeps coming out of nowhere! (Same thing happens with my scrap basket!) Can any cloning experts out there tell us why? (or.... maybe we don't really want to know!!!!)

Nope. I don't buy it. Instead, I leave it for someone else to enjoy! I generally do have a fairly good stash of small amounts, which is leftovers from projects. My primary "stash" is having several bags tucked away, each one with fabric, threads, and backing for a quilt I plan to make, together with a sketch of a pattern. The fabric is all washed, neatly folded, and ready to go. (My stash of batting is in the back of a closet, and ranges from whole pieces to scraps.) My stash of small amounts of fabrics -- leftovers -- is tucked away into a laundry basket, sorted by color families, and used for block swaps, an occasional scrappy sampler quilt, tote bags, and other small projects. I almost always have at least 2 quilts in progress, one at a stage where I can take piecing or small whole-cloth bits with me in a tote bag, and another at a stage where it really isn't portable. I don't have a sewing room and am not willing to give up a guest room, so quilting things are scattered through the house but very handy for me -- the Singer 99K in its case behind a sofa, sewing machine table folded and under the sofa, a treadle machine in a kitchen corner, card table behind the buffet server in the dining room, cutting mats with the card table, fabric and batting in guest room closets, threads in plastic boxes in an endtable drawer, most tools and gadgets and related goodies in a locker trunk in a closet, and my everyday stitching stuff in a basket at my favorite chair. I'm not done buying fabric, but at this point have enough on hand to keep me busy for at least 5 years, and enough is enough!

My regular stash doesn't reproduce, unfortunately, but the Black Hole Basket seems to be a prolific generator of tiny scraps. I think it sucks scraps out of hyperspace from some parallel universe. Roberta in D
